Unexplained Cut Out

Featured Replies

Hiya,

So something random happened on the way back from the supermarket.

After spending my brass in the supermarket I did the usual of connecting my phone via USB C-Type C and drove off and Android Auto  booted up but the screen buttons were just not reacting to touch.

After about 30seconds I decided to unplug it via the usb port in the front center compartment to fail it over to Bluetooth and when I did this the Columbus went black with none of the physical side button responsive to any input.

I pressed and held the power button hoping to for it reset or restart but nothing. As I pulled up to a junction to turn right with a steady stream of traffic coming towards me I decided to turn the ignition off and on to get the Columbus to boot up. Instead the total opposite happened. Nothing happened... upon hitting the stop/start button (car has Kessy) the dials did their dance but the engine did not fire.

I checked the transmission and noticed it was in Drive rather than park. So I pushed the leaver into Park and did and off / on with the ignition again... Nothing...just the needles doing their thing on start up and all the warning lights going out as usual but still would not start.

I then had very angry people being me peeping their horns and then I thought , damn I've broken down I'll have to push it forward out of the way...I went for the electronic handbrake release and it didn't disengage ... How do u take the car off it's handbrake in a seemingly electrical malfunction ?

I then decided to open the door and close it with the ignition off , hit the start button and everything fired up as like nothing had ever happened.

Needless to say I couldn't replicate the issues

Was quite unnerving

Just to note the batteries were replaced in the key fob about a month ago and no warnings at all were displayed on the dash save the one saying I needed to top up my washer fluid.....

Any ideas ?.

Would such a fault write to the memory so it can be read when hooked up ?.

Car is a 65 Plate 190SCR L&K with a DSG and has done 27k

My old Mk2 had a problem with cutting out when I first bought it which is documented here

and was due to a faulty BCU ...... that was a saga and a half...I hope this isn't the start of another bad egg.

Its due its oil change and service soon so will bring that forward.

2nd Service is due in 11,000 miles (variable)  and oil change is due in 1900 miles according to the on board computer

Many Thanks

Ben

I can't address the car issues, but computer USB-mounted drives should be properly ejected before they are unplugged. In the case of the Columbus system, I thought you were supposed to go to Media/Remove safely, then select the USB input before you unplug the source.

Might be the cause of your problem?

Usually when I unplug during a drive it has no adverse affect other than taking about 10 seconds to register that the bluetooth now needs to be used for media streaming (if I click the media button on the dash)...I can kinda get the Columbus itself getting in  a tiz but to affect the ignition of the car poses a few more questions I think....

So today.. I started the car as normal with Android Auto firing up as normal and then none of the touchscreen buttons or the physical buttons worked at all.

I turned it off and on.. Nothing

Unplugged my phone.. Nothing

So I did a hard reset by pressing and holding the power button for about 20seconds to force it into reboot.

Everything came back up and everything worked as it seemed until about 10mins later I touched the screen to change the track and it beeped.. Nothing happened and then randomly it started to beep continuously like the button had been pressed and held and then all sorts of random menus started opening up like it had been pressed loads of time and took time to process everything.

Will have to take it to be looked at.... Though I am guessing they will either flash it with the software again or it will make me out to be liar and perform perfectly..

Strange to say the least...

I have a 2016 150 Passat and encountered the following, so it might be worth checking with the dealer again. i posted this on one of the VW forums.

A couple of weeks ago when going to work, my car cut out just after setting off on one of the busiest traffic light crossroads in Bolton. The car would then not restart via the starter button for over 2 minutes. I could not move it as the parking brake had engaged, and there is traffic whizzing around you. No error messages on display, and then it started and I was off. 10 minutes later it cut out again just as I parked at work.

Went into dealer the day after and they could not diagnose the fault, but did do the parking brake software update.

On return, the car was horrible to drive, with the revs constantly dropping off alarmingly when setting off, and the parking brake feeling very 'grabby'.

Last Friday it cut out again in the rush hour on the roundabout over the M62 at Warrington. Again it took 2 minutes or so to restart. On Sunday, it did it again and I noticed dashboard lights which were not there before when it happened. It was saying 'start car manually' (impossible as button), then 'immobilizer active'. The glow plug was lit with both messages. I managed to take photos this time, as I was parked at the time.

Anyway, the car came out yesterday, and they have re adapted the ECU and replaced the fob batteries. Basically emptied the ECU and rebuilt the software. What a revelation. It now wants to drive smoothly again, and on my usual journey home, ti achieved a displayed 58 mpg, rather than the usual 51-53.

So it looks like it is fixed.

I've had this exact same issue when I had my Audi A6 avant Black line S tronic, I had literaly picked the car up from the dealership and had to go straight to a meeting so wasn't familiar with the behaviour of the S-tronic/DSG.

I had to get a ticket out of the gate barrier, stopped the car and it was still in drive with auto handbrake engaged. Couldn't reach the ticket so I had to open the car door to reach for the ticket. At this point the engine switched off and got itself in a state, tried started and it was just pinging at me.

After thumbling around and panicking a little bit due to the growing traffic behind me, I eventually worked out I had to have it in P, turn the engine back off and on again and all worked. The other one to be careful of is when the engine shuts of when you stop, if you put it into certain modes or press the engine off switch if gets very upset.

We have a Kodiaq at the moment and my wife has encountered this as she is not used to the way the DSG works as it's her first auto.

The other joy is the lad when you have it in Dynamic mode when pulling away in junctions, I nearly always set the mode to S when coming up and pulling out at junctions. Both cars had the 190bhp diesel engine.

Be interested to see what it is like in the Superb 280 when it turns up.
