Road Angel Deals

That's a pretty good deal. Paid the full price for mine, but then I'm an impatient monkey who went to Halfords for it.

Rob.

is road angel the best system? what about mobile units does it detect them?

It has a supplementary laser module that plugs into it which is capable of detecting mobile speed traps. Personally I don't bother using it, as chances are if you detect the laser it's because the officer has pointed his device at you and has his reading.

If I was shopping now I'd probably get an Origin Blue 2 over the Road Angel.

Rob.

is it better? cost?

Has more features, think it costs the same but I haven't looked into it as I already have an RA...

Wilsonan, I've sent you an email with the details.

Ta, I'll check my email when I get home!

Yes, as do the others mentioned. However, as I've said before, by the time it detects it its too late (99% of the time). It was OK when they used radar as that goes out in a cone shape so you get scatter which the unit will pick up. Laser uses something like a 2mm beam and there is therefore minimal scatter. Id say get the cheapest GPS based system you can and a diffuser if you want to be totally safe (if not totally legal!) :D

a diffuser if you want to be totally safe (if not totally legal!)

Ah, you mean one of those garage door remote opening things... ;)

Can't you get those ones that combine a diffuser and a detector, so if a laser gun is pointed at it this is detected and it warns the driver - then, the diffuser switches itself off so that when the laser gun is reset and another reading is taken, it'll work correctly, having given the driver some time to slow down?

Or was it all a dream?

Rob.

Yes you can get one that does that, so I'm told ;)

Hi 100mphplus,

Could you PM me the details of who is selling RA's for

Thank's wilsonan

The local branch of car-electronics will sell me one for

Try this setup (more features)

Dell Axim 5 300Mhz Pocket PC, Tomtom Navigator 2 Voice Sat Nav & Route planner, with GPS Antenna,

sixman9

I've been looking at this as an alternative ( sta nav as well seems a bargain)

I had been looking at the trafcam + TT2 but their web site is not working so this has put me off a bit. How good is the pocket gps database?

Was it easy to configure and install?

Where have you mounted it so it is visible?

sorry for all the questions but I've nearly given up with this and was just going to buy a road angel and move on

cheers

morgan

Well,

The software install was VERY easy (just have an Active Sync session up and run TomTom Navigator Setup). The Map took quite a while to transfer (10mins +) but then it was 92Mb for the whole of Great Britain (that's a little less than a 6th of a CD!!). After this all was pretty easy. Navigator paper instructions are minimal, but fortunately the device is VERY easy to use (nice big buttons). You CAN'T go to a place directly by postcode (you can put a partial postcode, which then then list MANY streets), but if you know the town and street, it does show a partial postcode at the end (incase 2 or more streets share a name, like london). There are also large list of POI's (Points of Interest) available all over the net.

The software is BEAUTIFUL and impressive. The voice will tell you to 'stay in the right lane' and not simply 'turn right ahead'. The maps can be swithed between map view and 3D (shows the road ahead) and zoomed in and out. You can store favourite places (both offline and via GPS when you're actually there) and the add on Checkpoint software (which is a Free equivalent to Trafcam, GPS-Assist and POI-Warner), does its job faithfully (warning 30 secs and 10 secs before the site). It has an 'attack angle' which might have to be tweaked a little, as Speed Cams are reported for nearby or parallel roads (which can be seen if the Nav software has not switched to the speed-safety screen). The software will re-route you on the fly, meaning that you can make a wrong turn and it will either tell you were to turn around OR create a new route for you. You can even say 'avoid a road', like the M6 for example.

I'm liking this software a lot, just got to find something to run the cabling under the dashboard and install a double-lighter adapter. If you buy a Bluetooth PDA you can get a Bluetooth (wireless) GPS antenna, so NO cables!!!

For a review of TomTom see here http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/tomtomnavigator2.php

As for mounts, I got an ARKON mount for about

rich

thanks for that, have read the pocket gps reviews and also the gps assist et al

Does it come with its own speaker or run through the stereo?

Hopefully I'll be able to combine this little lot with a combined gsm/fm/gps antenna to replace the original.

Re Jabba make sure you run good Optimax before you go, it can degrade if you go to a garage that doesn't sell much of it and this affects the torque figures. At least you won't get lost on the way and there are plenty of cameras to test.

Morgan

No probs mate :)

Unfortunately, there is no integration with you're car's stereo on this setup (unless you know something I don't). My PDA's speaker is ok, sometimes have to turn the music down though (my PDA is 3 years old now, newer ones like the IPAQ are supposed to be quite loud). Not too sure about the combined ariel either (as the PDA's unit MIGHT have connects specific to it).

As for the Optimax, I had considered filling up with something nice (I'm a cheapskate right now, using Asda unleaded at 73.9p in Coventry). However, I've heard bad things about Optimax in the forums (like Scooby motors falling out), so I might go for some BP Super Unleaded this weekend. I suppose a tank or 2 of Optimax won't do too much harm, as I'll probably resort back to Asda's stuff after the remap anyway :D
