Columbus Woes

Featured Replies

Overall I quite like having a built in satnav - much better than having my TomTom sliding about the dash on its sandbag mount as in previous cars.

However Columbus on a few occasions has taken me down narrow one vehicle wide country lanes or narrow car lined 20mph village side roads scarcely wide enough for a motor cycle never mind a Superb - rather than staying on the main roads. I don't ever recall the TomTom ever doing that if there was a "normal" road available.

My phone also has Googlemaps and Waze but you have to faff around with the USB cable to get it to AndroidAuto! I must be getting old!

Is there anyway of making the Columbus prefer staying off those minor-minor-minor roads?

When you enter an address you're presented with three routes; "greenest", fastest and shortest. Which one are you choosing? Generally I pick the fastest route (red) and it hasn't been bad at routing.

I think it is the first one in general (the green one)

Yeah, no guarantee that won't take you all over the place in a futile attempt at saving 3p worth of fuel!

I have that "green" route on my Garmin (motorbike) and did not realise at first just kept thinking why is it taking me this way and that.. :D

Think I'll try the red routes next time

That explains why my Superb took me down all the Lincolnshire back lanes last night after collecting it from the Dealer!

Red option looks like the better one.... :D

I've adjusted the settings so that I don't get the three options for the route and it automatically uses to the quickest, as this is the one I always want.  The other two are of very limited use.

Is there a setting somewhere for that?

Yes, there is.  If you go to settings, then navigation and then route options, you can untick the box for suggest three route options.  It's on page 76 of the Columbus manual for 05/16 to 11/16 cars that you can access online from Briskoda.

As I've already mentioned, the other options aren't of much use and I found that SWMBO gets confused if I ask her to put in a route when we're on the move and these options appear.

The only time it can come up with the wrong route is travelling from Poland to Lithuania as it sometimes suggests you go you through Belarus or the Kaliningrad Region of Russia.   Unless you have visas, insurance to drive in these countries and hours to spend passing through the borders, these routes are not viable options.

Try Waze directly on your smartphone, without Android Auto

position of navi's screen is lot safer on the dashboard than Columbus
