REAL (as in every day) fuel consumption for 2 litre 190BHP NON DSG

Featured Replies

Jeez....your diesel economy is worse than my petrol 220 tsi dsg!

Remember this. Winter time and cold temperatures will not help you achieve good diesel mpg unless you doing decent constant mileage and the engine reaches its optimal temperature.

Short journeys in your car will ruin your economy.

My mk3 octavia was the 150 dsg diesel. As with yours winter economy was poor unless i was conducting long journeys. Long constant speed journeys even with the car fully loaded returned 55mpg. Around town then i would see low 30s.

Have you bought the wrong car?

I went petrol this time around. Keep the diesel for the company car drivers, trucks, trains and shipping.

In the passed 24 hours in my Alhambra 2.0TDI SCR 150 ps / dsg i have done 756 mile ,  60-70 ish mph, half that car quite a heavy load, other half just me,

3 short stops and one long stop of 8 hours.

and from over brimming to brimming without spilling it took in 65 litres in the 63 litre tank.

(14.29 gallon)    756 miles divided by 14.29  gallons = near 53 MPG.

PS.

If i was to use it from now with a full tank for the next 5 days just doing about 10 miles a day it will take 2 gallons on more to fill it up again.

So it hardly ever does short journeys to the shops etc.

Well my mileage is about 30.000km per year that's about 18641miles (calculated obviously) and I generally do long trips. I am however not sure if Diesel was better choice over Fuel, can't get my mind around it. But now it is what it is I guess ^^.

Did you not comment that you are a diesel fan in another thread? Irrespective of mpg you prefer diesel right?

I would argue now that the petrol engines on constant cruise can reach diesel mpg figures.

I did say I am a fan true. But not that "hard" fan that ignores Nox figures and fact that in few years time diesels will get banned from big cities. My idea was to purchase a car for 6-10 years, but now with the way world is going that's what's bothering me. Looking at pluses and minuses diesel isn't that much better choice for me but the main reason was consumption and torque. Now with consumption being here discussed that's not the case and I also read in few topics that 1.8TSI and 2.0 TSI are quieter than 190hp which makes things bit more interesting ^^.

Diesel has only one advantage:
+ fuel economy, ~30% if count to money

but comes with huge count  of cons:
- bad smell
- extra noise
- additional vibration
- torque in limitted area of rews
- potential problems with AddBlue
- potential problems with EGR

my numbers from xls, calculated by filled 98E amount (2.0 TSI 220ps)
10l/100km city summer
11l/100km city winter(mostly caused 10-20min Webasto on the mornings)
7.6l/100km on highways with speed limit 90kmh
8.8l/100km on 6 000km trip Riga<->Burgas, four times shortly were reached 200km/h

True.

Petrol potential problem is the 'TSI'.  but then we are sure that by Euro 6 emissions they have all that sorted out and they will last 'long time mister'..

The petrol engine is certainly quiter than the diesels.

Yea I'd agree with that. Basically what MartinB said above is very good sum up. 30% in fuel consumption may sound small tho, but its actually a lot in a long run. I mean to do 300.000km with this car or more (hopefully it wil last hah =)) which with 30% less consumption can mean up to 11.665€ savings in fuel cost (quick calculation comparing 6.2L consumption avg on mine 190HP vs above what martinB wrote 9L (long trip was 8.8) including cost of diesel being here 1.244 vs gasoline 1.289). I also have to say that my consumption is lowering now when car is hitting 10.000km so it may drop bellow 6L on avg. About parts, on Fuel Engine you need to change cables and spark plugs every 90.000km (that's what I've been told at least, could be different else where) on diesel that's null. So there are costs on fuel/diesel and "potential" failures. I have 6 years warranty up to 200.000km so I won't look at costs of "Potential" failures.

To be honest I feel its here here... If you look at summary of bad things of diesel and good things of gasoline engine there is more pluses on gasoline engine side. It really depends on person and what he needs car for. Some may love gasoline for its quietness or maybe vibration free working, some may prefer diesels torque or some may just look at fuel consumption. I always loved diesels for the way they drive so for that thought, I guess my choice was good. I have to stop thinking about "what should I choose at the time" since its history :D.

P.S.: Before I drove Octavia 3  2.0 TDI 150hp for 3 years and did 70.000km with it, that car was much louder than Superb basically engine noise with 190hp is very very low. I don't really notice it much at all. With Octavia road noise and wind noise was nothing compared to engine noise.

How I calculated potential cost savings:
Avg fuel consumption 9L means at 300.000km = 300000 * 0.09L (per km) = 27.000L consumed, that's at current fuel cost 34.803€
Avg diesel consumption 6.2L means at 300.000km = 300000 * 0.062 (per km) = 18.600L consumed, that's at current fuel cost 23.138€
There are of course other factors here and maybe this price difference would be lower if we took all in account. But simple 190hp diesel vs 220hp fuel would proove that diesel is way more efficient in long run.

You are right in buy the car that suits the time?

However you have to consider economy and cost at that time also.

I did not thus i opted for petrol which gave me plenty of torque, more bhp and a smooth ride. I dont commute with it. The car is a family wagon which happens to look decent and will do 155mph (apparently)

My point was is with reference to the economy was that i can reach 50mpg in a large petrol auto car.
