Best sound deadening for Fabia estate?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. I've spent the best part of six months, working through all the different noises that have been emanating from my Fabia estate, but it has been drawn to my attention that now most have been eradicated, it's still quite a noisy car. What's the best product to use to remove some of the road noise/resonance from the vehicle?

I'd like something that's already has adhesive applied, and thin enough to place under the boot carpet and rear seats, whilst still looking 'stock' but at the same time still effective.

Many thanks in advance ;)

Do you already have rubber footwell mats?

Yes it's expensive. I have no experience of the other one you posted so couldn't say. Haven't done a fabia rear so not sure how much you'd need.

I've got carpet mats, with rubber heel plates........ :)

EDIT: Does anyone know the dimensions of a mk1 Fabia estate boot in inches? (Or WHY) FOUND IT! :)

Blimey, you don't want much then, you forgot cheap.

Oh wait...

Dynamat or similar or two layers of flashing tape into the spare wheel well, also the rear side panels behind the rear doors. Maybe also the rear hatch. also have a look at the products on Noisekiller's site. Generic noise reduction stuff can be quite cheap. BAF wadding, also sold as van insulation is good stuff for noise control.

Maybe a layer of that plus a layer of heavy carpet on the boot floor? And or put BAF on the inside of the door cards?

I used some of this stuff in the back of my car

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12-Sheets-10mm-Car-Van-Sound-Proofing-Deadening-Insulation-Closed-Cell-Foam/122798008278?epid=13001822880&hash=item1c9754e7d6:g:BPoAAOSwImRYGYE2

Did the boot floor and spare wheel well, under the back seats & the sides of the boot (wheel arches).

It seems to have done a fairly good job for the price. I wanted it to improve sound quality and its certainly made my sub sound nicer. Also, i can have the rear seats folded down without it making any extra road noise than when they are in place with the parcel shelf which was a massive plus point as I regularly drive with the seats folded.

I then used this stuff:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silent-Coat-2mm-30-Sheets-Pack-Car-Van-Deadening-Sound-Proofing-Damping-Mat/151262792131?epid=24009665152&hash=item2337f709c3:g:ZjIAAOSwqu9VLm0D

Took the door cards off and fitted to the outside of the carriers on each door. Seems to have quietened the cabin a bit and makes the door close sound more 'solid'

As for the rest of the car, I would imagine yours being a diesel you get plenty of sound proofing anyway. I know my old petrol fabia had much less fitted from factory. The vrs has behind the glovebox and on the bulkhead foam stuff fitted, along with the 'transmission tunnel' or whatever its called along the middle of the car.

Then theres the panel which attaches to the tailgate which has insulation behind and also under the bonnet theres a piece of it.

I think the headlining also has sound mat which I know improves things, I have a sunroof and without the blind pulled across there is a lot more noise in the cabin so I know it makes a big difference having it on the roof.

Do you have a boot tonneau? If so then closing that makes a small but useful difference for no money.

I bought the under-bonnet sound proofing mat that the vRS has and it made a surprising diference to engine noise. More muffled. If you fit one you have to fit an alternative orange clip that holds the bonnet stay as it's different to take into account the thickness of the pad.

silent coat is brilliant, we used it to great effect on out vw t5.1 van, made an incredible difference!

That looks good, Lee - thanks for sharing. How much did all that set you back?

Here's a reply I received today from " sound-deadening-shop"  on ebay )

We would also strongly recommend an initial coating (50% coverage) of Silent Coat 2mm Mat onto the metalwork first. This product will eliminate resonance and vibration, and stop the noise amplifying and booming around the vehicle. This is the most common cause of road noise inside vehicles.

Here's the  2sq.m pack: Item Number

Absolutely, I've covered the boot (100% coverage) with 2mm Mat in two of my personal vehicles (Mk2 Golf and an R32), both with excellent results. Both vehicles had noisy aftermarket exhausts too.

A 50% coverage will kill resonance and vibration, but I suggest a 100% coverage so you have a blocking barrier effect to stop the airbourne noise passing through.

The aoustic pad was £20 second-hand off ebay. It arrived folded up but was still OK. The retaining clips are pretty cheap on ebay and the orange clip was about

£1.

What sort of difference? less engine noise or road noise?

Nice one :-)

My model suffers with noisy timing chains and the bonnet pad damps that down quite a lot. Also dampens general engine noise. Can hardly hear the engine at 70 on a motorway.

I've also put the bonnet pad over the top of the new soundproofing..........wish me luck! And, ordered some new clips (thanks for the link, TMB) as Captain Cackhand (TM) dropped four of them in the engine bay!

On the front, it's hard to explain - I'd liken it to gently cupping your ears - noise is still present, but it seems more distant..........

The upsetting noise I get comes through the front left door and most of it is from the tires.

The car, Fabia MK33 1.2 TSI 81, is 5 years old, maybe I should replace the door seal (part no.: 6V0 867 365 J 5AP) ?

Would it be enough ?

The summer tires are 215 45 R16 86H Dunlop sport max which I have to replace for the next summer.
