LED headlights

Featured Replies

My 67 plate 1.5TSi SE L has full LED headlights. When I turn dip beam on the lights come on as it should be then the beam pattern lowers and then comes up again as if testing some sort of vertical alignment, What is this all about?

In 50 years of driving the LED headlights are the best I have ever had and for once I can actually see where I am going.

It's just the auto levelling test. Xenons do the same, you'll see it on any headlight system where there isn't a manual level adjustment dial on the dash somewhere.

thats interesting as ive thought about fitting LEDs, but on all the comparison tests with bi-xenons they seem to come up short on everything except colour.

Yes but these are full LED headlights and not a bulb conversion. The light output is stunning and cuts off sharply at a bit over bonnet height. Really looking forward to a bit of night driving. Also, because they are white, and the fog lights are yellowish, the cornering aspect of the fogs really shows up. A lighting system I am truly happy with.

so the focusing and housing is completely different. i see

Xenon's and LED's are now pretty close in terms of brightness and spread. The main benefit of LED's is that they have a far longer life expectancy and do not fade so much with age. Xenon's can lose ~5% of their brightness per year. Teh main disadvantage of LED's is that they are so expensive to buy/replace. They will of course become cheaper once they are mainstream, rather than a premiun option.

I tailed my wife home this evening from where we were visiting and she commented on “how bright my lights were and how the cornering fogs winked on occasionally”.  She must unfortunately survive on old yellow halogens while my LEDs are blisteringly bright. I love ‘em.

She doesn’t have total Poverty Spec as her rear LEDs were worth every penny and she does have cornering fogs :)

(her auto main beam switch is a waste of space but that’s another story)

I have these on my Toledo - the lights are Auto-levelling when first switched on.

Agree with your comments on the light output - they are quite simply the best I've ever owned (Bi-Xenon's included) and make night driving much easier.

I'm hoping they prove to be long-lived, although have noticed loads of Hyundai's / Kia's and Mercedes with failed LED DRL units.

Hence the 5 year warranty - should be cheaper by then.
