Standard Superb in Snow

Featured Replies

Those BMW's all around now as 'Much Cheapness' offers available for Driving Instruction leasing.

Often Indicator disabled for just the Instructor Driving, &  probably useful for Training Professionals & Police Drivers as Indication of intention to change lane is not always something they do.

Seemingly done when they see someone that needs to know, forgetting if always done then you always check mirrors, behind and indicate and you let people know that you might have missed as seeing you.

I find that as much as a bonnet getting hot and the snow going back to the windscreen there are those that have it sliding forward and over their sensors on the grill area, and activating 'Braking' /City Stop type features that should have been off anyway.

I've got Goodyear Ultra grip on my '16 plate 2.0 tdi dsg superb estate. Used them to drive to Austria in Feb this year, they felt great but didn't really have heavy/deep snow to deal with.

Drove round our village yesterday - approx 6inches of snow and still snowing. Initially  a little dissappointed, wasn't triggering the ASR or abs but just felt twitchy. Then I followed a Rav4, he was going sideways down the road...... everyone elso in the village seemed to be getting stuck on the hills but I could drive up them, so I suppose the tyres were ok.

I had driven my previous '09 plate dsg Octavia vRS tdi in the snow back in the winter of 2009/10 - snow for months and very cold - bloody thing was undriveable. Just sat there spinning it's wheels! Of course with dsg there is no snow mode and it would let me select a higher gear manually

Well, I made it. And the Superb did a sterling job on standard tyres. Two really scary moments - (1) when I found I'd misjudged the clearing of a track down my drive to the lane and the back wheels tracked through a foot of snow I hadn't cleared, causing the front to lose traction. Just got out of that one. (2) At the end of a hair-raising drive down the lane with 2 inches of solid ice totally covering the surface I realised I was going to have to stop at the end in order to pull out onto the main (gritted and cleared) road. Of course, having stopped on the 2 inches of ice at the end of the lane I had big problems slithering and fishtailing out and onto the main road - thankfully I'd waited until it was fully clear in the distance so my slow, rather undignified exit from the lane wasn't too dangerous.

Bloody frightening to be honest - not a journey I'd have done if it wasn't necessary. Now seriously considering winter tyres for the rest of the season.

As an aside, I found the sound and drag of the thick snow in the middle of the road dragging on the underbody of the car a little disconcerting, but it didn't seem to cause any major problems.

I got to use my fuel flap ice scraper for the first time this afternoon to take an inch of snow off my windows in south London. The panorama sky view window was a bit pointless, however. Standard Pirelli P7s coped fine with a bit of slush and ice. I hope that's it for the winter, though. Bah, humbug!

It's good to have the scraper but mine was covered in a dusting of snow making it hard to find the flap and it was frozen shut.

I have to remember to post in this thread after 29.12 then I pick up my new Superb. Chances are that we have a lot of snow in Finland and i have to drive 600km from dealer to home.
I have test drived 1.4 tsi in snow - about 5-8cm and studded tyres. No problem, but we do have about 6 months of snow and ice so that was business as usual.

I have to say that my 280 L&K Estate had been"Superb" in the snow and ice. When I bought it as an ex demo12 months ago the supplying dealer supplied an additional set of 18" inch alloys with Pirelli Sottozero winter tyres at a good price to cement the deal.

Living in the Chilterns we got about 5 inches of snow which has now turned to sheet ice on the untreated minor roads and lanes.

The 280 has no problem with traction and braking is very good.

It makes the perfect winter car, although if the snow were much deeper a Range Rover might be the better choice as the Skoda is not far of beaching on raised ridges of snow in the middle of some of the narrow country lane

I think it's really down to what tyres you have. I experienced snow in two different cars with summer tyres and they were both diabolical.

Now I'm retired I just look out the window and leave it in the garage if it's dodgy.

Definitely tyres, 100% with you on that. I had winters on the Avensis that I've just traded in, and they were great. This year, I didn't bother putting them on as come December / January, I was looking to change car (which I've just done), we had some snowfall in November and I was still on Bridgestone Turanza ER300 summers. It was absolutely shocking. Neighbour has an Avensis, and he said his Uniroyal summer tyres weren't too bad in the snow, though he's had my winters off me and they've transformed his car.

The only issue I've had with this one, which had a set of Sottozeros fitted the same day I picked it up... and snow came the next day, is that getting onto my drive which is flat, I do have to go up a pretty steep slope and a dropped kerb. As that's just become compacted / sheet ice, I had to take two attempts earlier on getting onto it. Hardly surprising though!
