Severe Crackling / Distortion in Driver Side Speakers (probably driver door ?)

Featured Replies

Car picked up new car on Friday 8th Dec - L and K with Canton sound system - anyone else had a problem like this ?   I cant see its worth pulling the door apart for until it reoccurs.

This is from my note to the dealer (140 miles away but there is a local Skoda dealer in Aberdeen for warranty work) - Thoughts ?

Severe Crackling / Distortion in Driver Side Speakers (probably driver door ?)

When it was found: This was noticed on Sunday 10th December with only a couple of hundred miles on the clock. It also repeated on the morning of Monday 11th December. In both cases the was after a cold but NOT severely cold night -  circa -2 degrees C.

Symptoms:  Severe distortion in the right hand speakers. The closest description to sounds I have heard before is when connecting either a headphone or speaker where the connectors are not making good electrical contact. Buzzing, crackling & distortion.  On the Monday the sound returned to normal after a couple of hours driving with the heating on.  It has been fine since then up to the time of writing 13th Dec noon.

Analysis: Potential driver side speaker fault or loose connection.  Metal shrinks in the cold so it is possible for an electrical connection issue to manifest in the cold if the initial connection is not up to the required standard. The passenger door speakers were fine so it is an isolated drivers side fault as opposed to a speaker design issue.

Clearly such an issue in a brand new car is not acceptable.  The car electrics should operate in typical UK winter conditions and -2 degrees is not unusual. Indeed I note that the car is sold all over Europe where winter conditions are much colder than the UK.

Planned Steps:  Given that the problem has not re-occurred since Monday morning  I do think there is merit in observing the behaviour for a period of time to aid any diagnosis and remedial work.

This is particularly true given any investigation may need the door card to be removed to access the speakers & connections, it would be nice to avoid this if possible. If the problem doesn’t reoccur then great and if it does we will all have more information to justify & inform the next and more intrusive warranty steps.

Given there is a 5 year warranty and the problem was clearly present from new I think this is the most sensible way forward to minimise disruption and maximise the chance of the actual root cause being traced first time should intervention be needed either in the near or distant future.

I've got the exact same problem on an almost brand new Sportline Estate with Canton. Same speaker, front right, only that I'm in continental Europe so that makes it passenger side for me. The problem hasn't manifested itself until ~1000 miles (~1600 km). It has reoccurred a few times and it usually goes away in a matter of minutes. I'm not sure how it relates to ambient temperature as most times I've had it the distortion began not immediately after setting off, but after driving for a while. Also my car is fitted with auxiliary heating and I make use of it every morning. So by the time I get into the car it's already nice and warm. I'll keep an eye on it and hope that together we'll be able to get a better understanding of the conditions in which it appears. Best would be if it could be easily reproduced as that would considerably speed up the investigation process at the dealer.

This sounds very strange for cold weather to be affecting things with the sound system. I wonder if it is something as simple as a dodgy connection somewhere?

Funnily enough I had a strange thing with my Canton system today as well, when all the speakers except the drivers door and sub, just stopped producing sound. Balance and fader don’t make any difference whatsoever. It was working fine, stopped the car, locked it and returned 5 minutes later, then the issues. Unless there is some electronic reset, I guess its losing the car to a dealer for a day.

I am thinking that the crackling issue is going to be awkward to track down. Hope you get things sorted with yours. Be interested to hear the cause.

Well, i don't know if this will help anyone else, but I managed to fix the issue I had. I watched a few videos on youtube, on rebooting the infotainment system, and thought, 'well, could be worth a try!'

So turned ignition on, turned radio on, and just held on off button in, until the button lights went out and relit, then released. pressed on button again, and hey presto! all my speakers were active again!!

The balance and fader controls now work again also. Saved me a trip to the dealer.

Not sure if this would fix a crackling speaker though.

Yes should work mine did something similar and does it every now and again reboot sorts it can’t be bothered with a trip to dealers as they won’t see the fault and it means it being off the road while they have it.
