Not wearing seat belts its reported- Brum RTA

Featured Replies

If correct a lesson on value of seat belts from last nights Brum accident that killed 6............

Having done RTA investigation with Dept of Transport seeing resultant needless deaths, as well as reckless driving affects so many as well as the direct victims ie emergency services and witnesses.

Our roads still account for a huge toll on society.

Reports from the scene suggest there could have been problems with visibility and seat belts may not have been worn in at least two cars, which police are investigating.

Police forensic tents remain up at the scene. The taxi is on its side and a black car which appears to be an Audi A3 is smashed up

Clearly one car has crossed the raised centre divider. In a 40 limit the speed of the car was probably well in excess of 40, The 4 people in the car were all thrown out, so no seat belts. As one resident said 'Young people like to race each other on this road'. Unfortunately innocent people have also been killed.

Also makes one think about wearing a seat belt in a taxi which is optional I gather but this might make more people wear one even if optional !

It’s the intention of the ‘one world government’ to impose autonomous vehicles on us because we can’t be trusted.

Anybody who doesn't wear a seat belt when there is one available is a moron, optional or not.

Is it optional for passengers in a Taxi or Black Cab / Taxi not to wear a Seat Belt?

I believed it was Drivers with Fares / Working that are exempt not passengers from wearing seat belts.

Had this discussion with the wife today regarding buses. When she uses the park and ride are there seat belts on the bus? Yes, the bus has seat belts, does anyone use the seat belts? No. I guess it's the same for people in Taxis.

I think Taxi drivers are exempt, not sure how the law stands for passengers.

The first fatal I investigated was a Rover 100 (Metro) into a laden artic.

Front passenger wearing belts, cracked sternum, bruising from belts.

Driver, bruising from belts.

Rear seat passenger sat centrally to talk to the front, not wearing belts, fired forward and upwards into roof, deceased, broken neck.

Had one right outside our house last year - Car lost traction on ice and hit a tree. All occupants were belted except grandad in the back seat, who was shot through the windscreen into said tree.

Used to get funny looks/comments (more than I normally do) whilst putting on my seatbelt on the Park & Ride minibus journey from our car park to Glasgow Airport which included several miles on the M8, which as we all know never has a RTC on it!

Same on the transfer bus from the airport to various Greek hotels, even on one journey where the driver spent the entire trip on his mobile.

There's no excuse for not wearing a seat belt where one is fitted and you are required to wear one.

The van driver and i were doing local deliveries and we spotted this guy looking at us, this was when seat belt law was first in force,

so as we pulled up at the shop on the same road this guy parks and get out & he is a Police Inspector and says that we will be reported to the council,

(we were in a council libraries and communities van)

for not wearing seat belts, and the driver says that we have an exemption letter, and the inspector says that piece of paper will not stop you going through the windscreen.

So lunch bought and away to drive off 50 yards or so, no seat belts on and my driver (Ex Army Ex Police) is out the van and sprinting to the Inspectors car as he drives off  with no seatbelt on, and he is knocking on the window and shouting,

those pips and uniform will not stop you going through that windscreen.

I even put on a seat belt driving a car onto a ramp, & feel a right tit, or just turning on a drive, just seems natural.

If I'm a car I feel naked without them, I've been doing it since 1975 when I first raced, and I'm sure they saved me from serious injury in 1977 when I wrote off a Mk1 Escort. I'm the guy sat in Asda car park wearing a seat belt, waiting half an hour for his wife to arrive.

Sadly the it appears the original post might also involve a touch of excess of speed and running out of talent as well as lack of belts.

I would actually like to have a full harness and it is possible to use existing mounts to achieve this, if you use the read seat ones.

Police seat belt tester rig we had at one event, bit crude but gave a bit of an example, even with a 7 mph crash.....

If you want just get then.

Total PITA though for day to day driving as you soon find as you are held back into the seat and then you find out how often you might lean forward in usual day to day driving.

Why is there no central barrier on that road. It's shocking that 3 completely innocent victims were killed by the out of control drugs gang coming the other way.

Guys in the Audi had form for doing 120 to escape from the police in a similar car last year...

I have been married nearly 40yrs, early on in the marriage my LandRover had Corbeau's and 4 points, my wife stated if I wanted the marriage to last I had to lose the 4 points. Apparently ladies anatomy is not suited to tight 4 point harnesses..........

There have been times i have considered fitting them again!

Taxi drivers are exempt only if carrying passengers..
Passengers are responsible for themselves except when under 16 where it becomes driver responsibility to tell them to belt up (which becomes quite hard when you are telling kids to belt up and the parents look at you like your the Devil.....

There are lots two lane each direction roads in the UK without any divider except for a white line. In a 40 mph limit it might have been deemed as not required.

One of the Audi dead was jailed for 3 years in November 2016, but released early ????

Taxi Drivers are not exempt only when carrying passengers, they can be for Hire and no paying passengers in the vehicle, yet.  'Plying for hire', as in the Gov.uk link.

But if they are driving and not in their Licensed District, say traveling from or to home, for servicing etc then they are not 'in trade' / working / going to be carrying paying passengers

(going shopping with the family.) for Gain or Reward and need to wear a seat belt.

Wearing a safety belt is a no brainer, not wearing one will run the risk of insurance payout reduction on injuries incurred in a collision, and you only get one face.........

Unless you're a politician, obviously.
