Octavia MK2 rear brake discs and pads

Featured Replies

Hello, I want to change my rear brake discs and pads on my Octavia MK2 2005 1.6 FSI estate, chassis 1Z5, and after hours of searching how to find out the correct specs, figured out I have to buy 1KF rear brake discs (lucky I found the service/part no sticker on the service manual, as the one under the boot carpet is damaged). All good so far, I don't know if I should go for Bosch or Brembo rear brake discs and pads (the price is the same). Anyone recommend one or the other one ?

The fun part start on the front brake pads: I can't find anywhere some indications regarding the type of front brake pads: so I put the reg no in eurocarparts or carpartsforless and turns out 2 models for front brake pads: first for 1ZF/1ZM, and second one for 1LL,1LP,1ZE. I have no idea which one I have and where to look at.

Also I would like to change the brake fluid, as I don't know when it was changed last time, and again I don't know how much brake fluid should I buy: 500 ml, 1 L, 2L ???

Highly appreciate your answers.

Hi Cristian, Do you know when you come to renew the rear parts you will have to wind back the caliper piston ! the best way to find out which pads are fitted is to take the wheels off and have a look, they usually differ around the edge/mounting and  the manufacturer of the caliper, you can buy a device for testing the water content in the brake fluid, Don't know the capacity or dot number of the fluid so hopefully someone will advise. cheers Stuart

Hi Stuart, thanks for advice, I found out what size rear brake discs I have from PR code on the sticker - it says 1KF so it's 256mm in diameter, however I can't find any code for the front discs (so I can buy the correct front brake pads).

A few answers for you, if you are going to change the fluid and flush through you will need 1 litre.

I would recommend genuine VW or Pentosin LV. I would not put any old fluid in to maintain compatability with ABS system pump and brake system.

Given choice listed, I would go Bosch. Other views may differ.

You also need front pads?  Are the discs ok, pretty common to have to replace together.  If you measure your front disc diameter it should give you something to go by to match up the pad..

You can also pay a skoda dealer or also I believe also online for a full PR code listing for you vehicle beyond the service book sticker.

Thanks for advice, I found Pentosin Super Dot 4 Plus on carpartsforless and also Pagid (Pentosin is 3 times the price of Pagid, but 15 quid is not the end of the world), I'll go for the Pentosin.

Is there a specific sign/symptom that the brake fluid need to be changed (as I said, I don't know when the previous owner changed it last time, and I'm not happy with the car brakes - but may be due to worn rear brake pads/discs, which I will change them anyway - just bought Bosch rear discs/pads, and was thinking of changing the brake fluid as well).

I know Octavia Estate is a heavy car, but comparing with by old Fabia Estate, Fabia was 'freezing' on the road when I was braking, when Octavia does something like a long braking...

The Service Schedule on Brake Fluid is at 3 years and 2 years, so if no record of being done, or even if a record best change the fluid.

& at the very least check the Brake Fluid for H2o content, you get a test kit.

As ski says its best to change/refresh the fluid if you are not sure its been changed in the last 2-3 years. Any dot 4 fluid will do, Pagid fluid is perfectly fine. The esoteric qualities of expensive fluid with 5 deg higher boiling point or whatever is totally irrelevant for us normal drivers, the important bit is getting rid of any water content, which leads to internal corrosion and debris leading to sticky pistons and worse. When you bleed you will see when the old fluid comes out of the caliper clean or dark and contaminated.

The poor performance ("long braking") is often due to a combination of partially seized brakes and contamination of brake surfaces. When changing pads, make sure you scrub the surfaces of the discs (I recommend a stiff toothbrush or fine steel brush) using plenty of brake cleaner. Finally, wipe hard with kitchen roll paper soaked in brake cleaner. You may be surprised at what comes off. You may want to have a go at your front discs as well.

It will take a while for new pads to bed in on old discs, but it is usually visually obvious how that process is going.

Any dot 4 "should" work but it was my understanding to keep the system in good operating condition and minimise failure risk of the ABS pump and clogged valves, a low viscoscity like genuine VW or Pentosin LV is recommended.   It what I found on forums on the Mk5 and I have continued with the Mk2 Octavia. For me £15 for the job once every two or three years is not going to break the bank. Like anything you ask a crowd of 100 people the same thing and you will get more than one answer!
