Any good deals for buying 4 tyres at the moment?

Featured Replies

My bank account is quivering at the thought, but I need some new tyres soon.

Standard Octavia vRS 205s or 225s, if it doesn't affect insurance.

Doies anyone know of any good deals going on at the moment?

http://mytyres.co.uk are excellent. Great selection of tyres, just select budget makes and there's loads for around £220 a set for 225/45/17's !!.

You've got about a sheet of A4's worth of contact with the ground - don't scrimp on tyres - they're the only thing keeping you alive!

I'd be looking for a good deal on Conti, Michelin, Goodyear, Toyo, Yokohama etc. rather than no-name jobbies. I've had discounts in the past from buying a set.

I get my tyres from Mytyres.co.uk or camskill.com. Then get a garage in Prescot to fit them for £8 per tyre.

There's VERY little between the tyre manufacturers, that's proven. The most important thing is a little common sense. If you want to drive like a loony, Michelins & Pirellis aint gonna save you when you lose control. Don't be fooled by the sometimes crazy prices of some tyre companies. I just don't buy into this 'tiny little contact patch between life & death' nonsense.

Under normal circumstances (and for us all) that's good enough. Don't think for one minute that more people are saved on the roads cos they use expensive tyres.

If you race or go to the Pod, fair play, buy racing tyres, but in the real world, there's nothing in it. I've used them ALL over the years and the best overall tyre I had was Falken (Price/longevity/grip/wet prformance).

Michelin, Pirelli & Goodyear spend £Billions on F1 and Motorsport every year to be seen. That's not to say that they're no good cos they most certainly are, but I'm sure you get the point. 3 times the price they aint. :)

Good thread Jon. Dont forget some are better at reducing road noise too

V.Impressed with my Eagle F1's! Great grip and look good too!

Costco do seriously cheap Michelins. They only sell Michelins, so they discount massively. I

Having had various tyres myself over the years, I've found that some are much better than others. The worst (and they were very bad) were cheapo ones fitted to my old Mondeo when I bought it, hence going for 'premium' brands since.

I'd be a bit p*ssed off if I got some crap tyres and the car wouldn't hold the road for the next 2 years....

Jonny boy, those Falkens are Cheap though!:

Other people have suggested:

TOYO PROXES T1-R 205/50 ZR17 £ 95.70

I bought a set of 205/50/16 Conti Sportcontact 2s for the Focus for about 80quid each 3 years ago, which I was pleased with! That's the sort of deal I'm looking for :)

I had some Michelin Pilots from Costco in the past.

They were very grippy, but wore out fairly quickly on the front -15000miles on a 136bhp Mk1 2.0 Mondeo, not sure how long they'd last on a re-mapped vRS....

They weren't that cheap last time I checked.

I'm hoping for under a ton for each tyre.

225/45/17 do seem to be substantially cheaper. I'll phone the insurance tomorrow to find out if I can fit them without being penalised.

mytyres.co.uk are brilliant, delivered to your door, they have everything in stock and are the cheapest I have used on other cars although I have not had any for my Octavia yet. Get mine fitted for £8 per wheel with nice self adhesive weights etc.

I use to have falkern fk 451's fitted before the toyo's. Never have them again. Compund was very soft. Nice and gripy but in the summer at brunters they just melted. At the end of the day the tyres overheated after 2 laps.

Also the main reason why didn't like them was the tyre walls. Very hard. You can run them flat they are that hard. Ride was poo.

Thanks, that's useful to know and what I might have expected.

I 'll look for Toyos

Wider tyres is considered an 'upgrade' byy the insurance, but won't cost me any more (possibly because I already pay through the nose for having a re-map!)

John, exactly my point. For general use, most budget brands are fine. If your going to race on the track, different matter all together. The thread asked for tyres that do the job on a budget, not for a race meeting.

Edit - carnt spel

I'm probably going to use etyres for mine. Their straight-up cost is more than mytyres (e.g.

I want tyres that *will* take a hammering. After all, the car puts a lot of power through only the front wheels.

I was looking for a good deal (ie. good performance at a good price though)

In that case. Then there poo. Ride was aweful. Much better with the toyo's. Also found the toyo's to have a better ride than the conti premiums on swmbo car.

edit. Also my current Toyo's are still looking good after 6K. The falkerns after 6K the fronts were getting low.

When I'm in Liverpool next, (I used to live there and sometimes see family) i'll have to arrange a mini meet ? Jon.

No problems

IMHO there's massive differences between tyres, especially in the wet.

I don't see why people pay 10k+ for a car then scrimp on their only contact with the road. Each to their own but it strikes me as a ridiculous thing to do!

I'm going to be buying new tyres soon and i will be buying the 225/45/17 instead of the 205's so ive just checked with the insurance(privilege)and they said as long as the alloys stay the same there is no change to the policy:thumbup:

I have an alternative solution...

I have 12 tyres in the garage and 4 on the car.

All 225x45x17

4 Well worn still road legal *just* P zero Assimetrico - 100 quid all 4 +delivery.

4 Pretty dam good P zero Neros, backs like new - 80 quid a corner + delivery.

4 Dunlop SP9000 RACE (definite summer tyre only! Covered 5k, easily 5k left) 300 + delivery.

4 Toyos T1-R new at Nov/December covered 3k maybe 4k, very good, 300 + delivery.

I hope you can see I son't scrimp on tyres, a set for each season :)

Umm I should copy this into a new for sale post I think.

For those interested Which have just dombe another test on tyres. There is some difference between the brands for grip in both wet and dry. Also a lot of difference between the wear rates. Worth reading - I got my March edition this morning.
