Help fitting radio signal booster

Featured Replies

Thanks to help on here, I’ve got my signal booster for new radio. I know I need to connect the blue wire on the booster to the ignition lead on my radio, which is red.

However, does doing this require a pair of wire strippers?

There should be power from the radio by means of a cable labelled ANT (it's meant to be for the retractable aerials but works equally well for this)

Don’t think I’ve got an “ant” cable

The red is commonly called the ignition live, comes on when the ignition is on.

The yellow is commonly called the memory live, it's a permanent live so you keep the radio's memory (station list etc), a small draw so won't flatten the battery.

The blue and white is commonly / normally used for an electric aerial or a similar 12v device. This would / should only be live when the ignition is on.

So in thereory you could use either the red or blue & white.

Personally I'd strip the clip off your blue booster cable and piggy back it on to the red ignition wire.

The blue/white cable which is labelled power control is the one that'd otherwise be the ant cable.

Essentially there's a little switch in the radio that will turn power to it on when the radio is on. That'll be the one you want to join it to.

A little heads up from some reading I've been doing, possibly using a Polo aerial to screw on instead of the stock one can also improve signal extra, but someone who has experience should probably confirm.

Just use a Scotchlok connector to join the wires. You only need a pair of pliers to do it. You can get the Scotchloks in most car shops, Halfords, etc.

See here...

Can't be much of a car shop if they've never heard of a Scotchlok. Dumb sods :tongueout:

@TMB - You just recommended someone to use Bodgeloks!!? ;)

Haha, I know they are not the best things but they are a quick, neat and easy solution for a little job like this. Personally, I've never had any trouble with them.

Well the radio works atm, even after the bodge locks.

Sweet. You all sorted now for some tunes.

Possibly a little late now but....

That connector on the blue wire is for pushing into an ISO adapter socket or car ISO socket (the black connector). On an OEM radio you wouldn't but with aftermarket head unit properly following the ISO spec, the h/u would feed power out through pin 5.
