Does it have hill hold enabled ? (doesn't roll backwards when stopping on a hill)

Good question, I'll try and remember to check when I'm next out.

Very interesting, thank you for pointing me to the info - and for the write up you did in the first place. I guess I'll phone around and see if I can get it done for £175 somewhere first before forking out for all that equipment! Bet it's satisfying to know it's done properly though when you do it yourself.

Snowathlete,

Read your missives with interest having just (12 days ago) acquired a similar 2014 Superb but the estate version.  After 11 years with our previous Superb it's taking a while to get used to driving a DSG box with additional bells and whistles but has just had the 'fix' (sadly?), 40K service to include Haldex/DSG.  Mysteries remaining include getting our mobiles to pair with the Colombus (via the MFD menu) and understanding the heating and ventilation system.  We too get the reported low freq grumble when first starting up and pulling away but it's gone by the time we get on the main road.  She's noticeably thirstier than her predecessor (but then we expected that to a degree) and an impatient right foot even in 'D' rather than 'S' sets you back in your seat a little.

Enjoy your new car, drive safe

Good to hear from someone else experiencing much the same car at the same time. Love the look (and practicality) of the estate version. That's the only thing ours hasn't got which we really wanted, so it looks like your one is about perfect! Reason we got the one we did was price (seemed like a very good price) and it was local.

Ours is DSG also. Our previous car did only 19MPG :o so whatever the Superb achieves is going to be far superior in terms of economy for us! We've not really had a chance to use it yet or play with the toys but I wonder if we'll have the same problems with the phones as you've had.

Hope you enjoy your new car too!

You may have already got the car, but I'll toss out my short list.

If you are looking at one with the panoramic sun roof, look around the drivers foot well and passenger foot well for signs of water leaks. These roofs can be a major headache.

If it has the optional removable tow hook, make sure it fits properly. Mine didnt.

Of course, all the usual stuff.. Take rubber gloves. After the drive, pop the hood and check under the oil cap for any signs of water mixed with the oil.

Check around with torch for signs of fluid leaks.

Check under the car for rust.

Check for crushed pinch weld seems near the jack points.

Check in spare tire well for rust.

If it has the optional removable tow hook, make sure it fits properly. Mine didnt. It does have this fitted and I tested it before purchasing and it seemed to work fine. I haven't tested the electrics - come to think of it, not even sure where it connects.

Check around with torch for signs of fluid leaks. I didn't do this.

Check under the car for rust. didn't do this either.

Check for crushed pinch weld seems near the jack points. Good idea, didn't check this but I will take a look.

Check in spare tire well for rust. I did do this one :-) and there is no rust!

Thanks Pablomax, all useful tips and still useful even now.

Booked in the DSG service for £179 at the main dealer. I did find a local VAG specialist who knew what they were talking about but they were more expensive. I may use them in the future for other work though. Given the price of the oil the dealership cost isn't bad really.

I'll probably get my local mechanic to do the Haldex oil change. I may also get him to do a standard service but I don't know if it's necessary...my car has variable servicing. I am guessing this is based on how the car is driven, mileage, time etc. The car tells me it doesn't need a service for another year. It last had a service a year back at an independent according to the service log book. I don't know what oil they put in or whether genuine or pattern parts. Is there a consensus on genuine/pattern parts for the Superb?

I would suggest that you have the oil/filter changed every 10,000 miles using VAG approved filter and VW507.00 oil.

I agree with what Drefaldwyn says. My car came with variable but I switched to 10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first.  The variable servicing is really for fleet owners who just want the lowest cost service regime that you can get away with. If you own your car and care what it runs like as it ages, do the annual or 10,000 mile routine.  I make them change the air filter too, they aren't expensive.

Indeed - I had mine changed to 10,000 mile servicing when I bought the superb at 14 months old 14,000 miles because the variable servicing gives way too high a mileage between oil changes especially for a car with a cam chain (my petrol) , turbo or a diesel with a DPF (most diesels in the Superb II). Even on the petrol you can see the oil change to a dark brown when it is due a 10k service - heaven knows what it would look like at about 20k miles.

We'll do under 10k miles a year but sounds like a service every 12 months is a good idea. I am a believer in preventative servicing to avoid future problems. The DPF worries me a bit as well because we don't do that many big runs, mainly short journeys really. Any further tips on how to protect the DPF?

Thanks all for the guidance.

You need to take it out on a regular at reasonable speed run. It's one reason I bought a petrol - my commute is long but slooooow with traffic

I have stated before on here that I bought the car expecting to have to  throw it down the motorway once a month.

In four years I have never seen the dpf light on despite many short journeys every day, I rarely even hear the fans over running ( a sign it has just done a regen, or is about to)

I think these later engine implementations have been designed from the ground up with a DPF in mind so much better

A work colleague had DPF issues on my same journey  but that was with a  VRS pd . DPF was an afterthought and pd injection not really designed for active DPF injection regens

@snowathlete about DPF and regens - you should notice it by higher revs when stationary or by smell of  burned rubber behind your car when unpacking boot ;)

I never turn engine off but go on the short drive.

Download "VAG DPF Free" app so you can monitor it - or full paid version.

Has 4 new tyres now (Goodyears, as recommended by many here )m has had the DSG and Haldex serviced, and it passed it's MOT today. Just needs the wheels aligned and an engine oil change and the condition is where it should be. We paid ten and a half for it which we thought was a fairly good price. Obviously it cost a bit to get it up to standard but we're happy with the car.
