Metal shavings in Haldex oil - twice!

Featured Replies

So i have now changed the haldex twice due to metal shavings in the oil. First one lasted 35000km and second almost 30000km.

Symptoms:

1. Felt like i hit something when backing up and turning.

2. Loud noise when haldex connecting in loose snow.

Anybody else experienced similar?

I am a bit worried what will happen after 5yrs/100000km when warranty expires..

If this is happening and it is under warranty, why don't you take it back to the dealer and get them to look at it?

Yeah they have changed it twice now, for free.

Still no answer why it has happeened

What have they actually changed? Did they change the whole unit or just the pump or maybe the clutchpacks? Other than bad luck I cant think of too much that would knock out two completely new haldex units (that is if they did replace everything).

Only thing I can think is bad oil /no oil

Whole unit as i understand. Exhaust and everything has to be removed.

I haven't had any noise but my Haldex 5 isn't working.

A code showed up in the last service (failing clutch pump) and it will be changed next week.

They can't explain why the code wasn't mentioned at the previous service (when the car was still in warranty), and they will therefore do the pump change at their cost.

PS We were in Tromsö a few years ago, we arrived on the first day of summer and loved your town, especially the cable car up the mountain! It was all very Where Eagles Dare :)

Sorry to hear that, there have been a few reports of failing pumps. I would be curious to know if they change the pump or the whole unit

Looking at the design of the Haldex V it is easy to see how a disintegrating pump could generate metal that could find its way into the clutch pack and interfere with its operation, that may give you a noise. Usually you just get pump failure and the Haldex just stops working and you are 2WD again.

Maybe they only changed the pump first time and there was still metal in the clutch area?

Maybe worth asking the dealer what they did and what they thought had gone wrong. I would be curious to know myself (obviously!)

I have had Haldex gen1, 3, 4 and now 5 with no issues (up until now anyway ) There are always reports of failures but I think it is a generally good system. The Gen5 does get more use than previous models as it is more active in normal no-slip driving which some say is better than previous as it exercises the system (some said it was a problem of the earlier system that it did not get use if the wheels never slipped)

I'm pretty sure they just changed the pump. At least they said they have the pump in stock so they can do the work.

Anyway, the drive is back on all 4 wheels and with all the snow we have at the moment, it is very welcome.

Today they ordered complete haldex unit with pump! The shavings in haldex made the pump compensate so that it also is broken.

As I understood it they changed the same, Only 19000km ago.

They have used over a week now.

they have documented wear on tyres, filmed oil etc.

Either a bad "batch" of units your dealer has access to or they are not installing correctly....as metal shavings in the unit twice is not good news...

Again I would verify 100% as to what parts & work they did each time...

I have my 2015 scout booked in this coming Monday for a service, I am asking them to investigate a similar haldex issue with mine. I have experienced the low speed bump felt through the body, especially noticeable when turning or reversing. My cousin who is a chief tech chap with JLR has already suggested that the pump or clutch may be at fault. Will update on Monday when I know a bit more.

Hi, my 2015 Scout is in now having a pump fitted! It had NO drive to the rear wheels.

I found it quite difficult to get them to fix it, they had it over Christmas and told me they had carried out all the computer checks and as far as they were concerned it was working correctly! I explained again that the front wheels would spin for 5 or 6 metres, so it couldn't be working correctly. I took the car to a grassy slope and videoed it with both front wheels spinning and the rears doing nothing! I showed them the video and then they managed to find a fault code!!!

It is also having the leaky panoramic roof replaced!

That is pretty poor, when you have to go and provide videos of the fact it doesn't have AWD! Hope it isn't my local dealer.

I would avoid that dealer in the future.

My car is now done. They replaced haldex unit, haldex clutch and reused the pump as they did not find anything wrong with it.

So why have I changed all these parts twice? This time they beleive it was not cleaned good enough last time. Who knows, the car works, the parts have 5 year warranty and I did not have to pay €4000...

Update from my service..... dealer unable to replicate the problem, and no fault found on the unit. Still whilst it was in they discovered a recall on the front suspension that was changed, so not all bad.

There is a TPI out for early Haldex 5 pumps, known fault and a new design of pump is available. Mine died after 20,000 miles.

Do you have any more details on the TPI? Reference number? Or the Part Number for the new pump design?

Sorry no. I know about it because the dealer mentioned it when I took the car in for new Haldex 5 pump under warranty. Later, I paid 8 euros (I think) for 1 hour on ERWIN and found it there. I read it, but didn’t save it as I was looking for other stuff. The new pump part was mentioned but I didn’t record it because I already had it by then.

But you could buy 1 hour on ERWIN if you need the exact TPI. But your dealer has ready access to it, you should ask them.
