rear window heating turns off

Featured Replies

Hey guys!

I own skoda octavia, 1.tdi, 2008. I have a problem with rear window heating (not the rear mirrors, but rear window). When i turn it on, it immediately turns off after 1 second...so the light turns on and off. I checked the fuses but they all work correctly. I switched cables at the rear window as a precaution and it still doesnt work.

Any ideas?

If you raise the revs a bit, does it then work?

Just wondering if the system/battery voltage is a bit low.

haven't tried it yet tbh.

do you mean to rev it and at the same time try and turn it on? or rev it and after it turn it on ?

If you're just sitting on your driveway, try holding the revs up at say 1750, then switch on the heated rear window.

Im back with the results. It didnt work. Tried reving it for quite some time, but nothing has changed. Also went over 2000 and result was the same :(

Read the battery voltage with a multimeter when it does it. It could be the battery volts low due to a poor battery or an alternator that is not supplying enough current for any number of reasons.

what should a standard(working) voltage be?

Should be 14+ measured across the battery terminals with engine running and minimal electrical loads switched on.

I'll just have a look at a wiring diagram for the rear screen heater if I can find one for your car, not sure whether there's a relay involved, probably. Do you hear a clicking from under the dash consistent with a relay switching on, then off again?

Thank you so much for your input.

I do hear some clicking from under the right side of the dash, but that only happens when i start the engine and it only happened like 2 times in the last months, so i have no idea what that is

It looks (from wiring diags) like there is a relay (in the onboard supply control unit), and from your description above it seems that it isn't being 'told' to operate, or isn't able to.  That could be due to low system voltage.

Does the car have heated seats by any chance,? That would be another thing that might get inhibited if it were a voltage issue.

No it doesnt have heated seats. Its funny because front window heater works normally. A few days ago my friend diagonsed it with laptop because we tried to figure out what was wrong, and on the heating section of the program it showed that it read the function to turn on but also turned off after it. I'm not sure if this has anythin to do with it though. There was also voltage next to it but i dont really remember it, so i guess ill need to run the tests again, but also measure it on the battery.

Good luck with it, and please let us know the outcome/fault found, once it's fixed.

thanks and will do. hopefully this is an easy - low cost fix

So i took it to my mechanic who checked all the wires, fuses, battery and everything under the dash and said everything was working perfectly. So he said he's suspecting something about climatronic...im not really sure what. do you have any idea what he's talking about? Told me the costs of repair would be close to around 300€, which is kinda a lot.

I'm not an expert on Octavia 2 systems, but from other models, I don't think the climatronic controller has any connection with heated rear window function.

Wait for some octy2 owners to comment, or get a second opinion from another garage.

Climatronic he would mean the whole panel unit which employs the heating/cooling controls and also the button regarding the rear screen heater which is working via it.

Perhaps a climatronic panel unit would solve the issue.

By the way, have you still had any fix finally?

I wonder if the rear screen gets turned off if you are calling for cooling at the same time? Just a thought.

Yes lots of things maybe...

All these I would think a faulty clima panel? (electronic issue)..

no, actually no luck. i've just given up on it. since the guy told me it might be some climatronic issue and would cost about 300€ to repair it, i just leave it with that.

everything else on the panel works though...

Did your mechanic ever check the continuity of the screen element? Just wondering if its open circuit somewhere and so the car is indicating a fault by not letting it turn on?

you mean the lines on the window, that are supposed to heat up? if you do, i was just checking out some youtube video about it. to be honest, i do not know, because i had to leave my car there for the night and he told me he never found the real issue, but didn't say anything about checking it.

thought i might give it a try, but i wonder...in all the youtube videos, people first turn on the defroster, so it powers up, and then they check if there is any voltage on the lines...

this is a real newb question..but yes. how i am supposed to check/power the lines, if the heater turns off immediately?

I suspect the switch is faulty. If it is a push switch if you press and hold the switch will it stay on as long as you are holding it in?

Or is it a lever, 2 position switch?

it's a push switch, and no, it will not stay on as long as i hold it. no matter what i do, it shuts off after like 1-2 seconds

it looks like the image under. and the upper one (front window) works fine

Have you tried swapping wires, bottom to top switch, to eliminate the switch? Not sure if this is difficult to do or not
