Brakes & Skoda warranty

Been informed today (by a Skoda Service Centre) that Skoda DON'T warranty brake pads or discs as these are considered a fair wear'n'tear item whatever the age or mileage.

 

Bit shocked & don't like or agree with it but, fortunately the Master Tech that inspected my car doesn't either & found a slight oil leak on a caliper which IS a warranty item. Therefore, both the pads & discs have to be replaced due to "consequently damage" gonna buy that man a drink me thinks

 

Only downside, is 7 to 10 days of "less spirited driving" said with a smile on the Master Tech's face, till the parts arrive.

 

Surely, brakes & pads are meant to last more than 4,800 miles, pieces of metal built-up on the pads have been eating a groove into my disc.

Tunes car to 300bhp, drives it like he stole it and then tries to claim prematurely worn discs on warranty.....    :blink::D

 

Good on you for trying though, I'd have just replaced them myself and put it down to my driving style personally but maybe that's just me.

I'd be insisting they check and see why those calipers are in a shocking state at 4,800 miles old.

 

I'd say the fluid leak is a torn seal in the caliper caused by those pieces of metal fillings, not good.

I thought consumable items were covered for the first few months? Maybe it's only three months in which case you're beyond that of course

 

Certainly discs should last more than 4800 miles.

Wording is "will only be considered" for under 6 months or 6-1/2k miles but, I did find it surprizing that the Service Centre stated "Skoda don't warranty brake discs or pads"

 

This is more a beware thread than an moan as my brakes are being fixed under warranty.

Welling looking at the T&Cs I would expect them to cover your issue.

 

Did the chunks of metal come out of the pad friction material? How did you retrieve them?

Yep both lumps were embedded in the brake pad causing a loud grating/grinding noise together with wearing a rather deep groove in the discs themselves.

 

Apparently, metal has replaced asbestos in brake pads in the last few years & under heavier use this kinda thing can happen but, some mechanics claim this a defect of the brake pad. This certainly a line I would have persued had the need arisen.

 

My mechanic retrieved them for me whilst having some other bits n pieces done to the car. Not very easily done as the groove was wearing in the backside of the nearside front disc obviously, mechanics make it all look very simple !

Sounds like the pads were defective to me.

Asbestos hasn't been used in brake pads for about 25 years, it's was banned a few years before i started in the trade, the ony metal part on a brake is the backing plate, the friction meterial is a composite of different things but not metal as far i know.

How did that £1 coin get in the brake pad? :o  :biggrin:

Must be a defective set of pads as not only were the pieces rusting but were also attracted to a magnet. Dunno kinda makes them metal to me unless, you have any better suggestions ?

Most brake pads have metal in their composition, some can even be made entirely out of metal (sintered steel). You wouldn't get full metal pads on road going vehicles, but most cars have semi-metallic ones as standard - they have metal shavings in them I seem to recall, helps with longevity amongst other things.

Defo defective pads, and i'd say very cheaply made pads as well, perhaps some dud's got into the production line as i've never seen anything like that, 

 

to be honest it looks like a piece of a fitting shim but do MK 3's have them on them on the caliper's, i know my MK 2 don't have them.
