Best LED bulbs

Featured Replies

I have a stock 1.6TDI Hatch back.

I want to change all the bulbs to LED except the main / dipped / fog

Just wondering what you have all used? I tried the front side lights and the unit I got just does not sit correctly.

I am just trying to lift the age of the car.

Also while I was having a look on the front fog lights I noticed a bulb next to the halogen unit. However no matter what combination of lights I put on they don't work. Are they meant to?

The "extra" bulbs are DRL's - fitted as standard, but not activated! 5 minute job if you can find someone with VCDS.

I've switched out my sidelights and DRL's for LEDs, I've used the osram bulbs. They're expensive but I've had no end of bother with cheap ones failing when fitted to the exterior of the vehicle, interior ones seem to last a lot longer.

You'll need the error cancellation resistors though.

I'm planning on doing the fog lights too but osram don't do affordable bulbs for them, so it'll be some cheap Chinese jobs...

I like these, if they fit your car. Sidelights and interior reading lights. No errors either.

Just be gentle with the head bit but with the 4 led's on the head they give a good forward facing light and have proved reliable for me.

Edit - insert correct polarity.

Not a bad shout but I don't like the look of them and if you can see the bulb they look a bit cheap. Thats why I try to go for this look

But they dont really fit in the font side light just a bit to long. Which is a shame because in my other car they look smart.

A 5 min job why the hell did they not do that in the factory!!! Once activated do they just come on with the fog light?

All of my interior bulbs are LED makes such a difference!

Eventually I will have everything LED. Just wondering what people use? Iam looking forward to doing both rear clusters in full LED.

I tried all sorts of different LED's to replace the front sidelight bulbs, Every LED i used  threw up the error light on the dash and didn't last very long, Gave up on them and just put the standard 501 bulbs back in..

I don't get any errors with the ones I have just the size a little to big.

The DRL come on with the ignition switch and go out when the light switch is moved from OFF.

I activated mine with the Carista app, as said it is 5 minute job. You can still turn the DRL on and off using the left hand stalk as shown in the user manual.

The bulbs have to be the factory fit long life bulbs as the vibration is quite high and ordinary bulbs only last a few months. I found that the vibration fretted away the centre contact of the correct bulbs after about two years, but you can add another blob of solder with a soldering iron.

Fair enough, but you cannot see them in my side light due to diffuser / lens and they look quite cool in my map reading light fitting. They only just fit in here length wise but actually makes for a better reading light imo.

As said too.........no canbus issues re side lighting, although i think this may depend on the age of vehicle.

I wonder if our headlights are the same as I don't think the head of this bulb would fit in the small whole!

They will not fit the whole of the hole ...............................but they will fit through the small hole, Lol.

I've switched all mine over, haven't used any load resistors as I've coded the car to expect LEDs.

- DRL/indicators/reverse:  Morimoto XB LED (replaced bases for indicators)

- fogs: Philips X-treme Ultinon LED (clones)

- licence plate: Superskoda Mega Power (clones)

- puddle lights: Superskoda Mega Power

- rear clusters: genuine LED clusters for the Chinese Octavia

- sidelights: Philips X-tremeVision 6000k

Are you able to provide links to these products please?

That's pretty nifty, are there any age/type restrictions on that? I'd quite like to do it on my 59 plate car, as let's face it, who wouldn't want to fit LED's to everything!

Very quick word of warning.

I wasn't able to find the original sellers I bought from. Therefore, although the clones look identical there is no guarantee they are the same quality as the ones I've been using without issue.

Morimoto XB LED 1156:

These are discontinued. When I bought them, they were ~$5 each from a US sellers bargain section which is why I was happy replacing the bulb base with a PY21W style for the indicators. They seem much more popular in the US than here...

Newer version: http://www.morimotohid.com/led-lighting/1156-morimoto-x-vf-led.html

Philips X-treme Ultinon LED:

Genuine versions aren't cheap, I grabbed some clones from Aliexpress for about £25 which work well including dimming for cornering fogs.

Licence plate:

Didn't need the included resistors as I coded the car.

Puddle lights:

There might be clones of these now, I picked them up used genuine versions from another forum member.

Rear clusters:

Originally fitted to a Chinese FL Octavia hatchback, there are no estate compatible versions and I believe you'll need a BCM that supports LED lighting. These will need coding in with VCP or ODIS-e after fitting as VCDS can't alter the lighting parameters. Part numbers are 1ZD945095A and 1ZD945096A.

Example listing: http://www.cars-equipment.com/www/en/shop/lighting/oem-1zd945095a-1zd945096a-led-tail-light/

Sidelights:

I tried both Philips and Osram T10 led's, the Philips had a much better light pattern. At ~50lm they match the original halogen in almost every way apart from colour temperature and power usage. In my opinion, they are a definite improvement over most multi-LED, annoyingly bright versions that tend to be fitted. They will only work one way round.

All MK2 FL cars should have a BCM and I believe VAG added LED support to BCM's somewhere around MY11 or MY12. I've seen both success and failure stories using earlier versions but the worse case should normally be adding a load resistor...

You can also swap the BCM, it's not uncommon for LED supporting BCM's to come up on eBay at ~£60 and it's very easy to replace on the MK2 FL - obviously it would need coding :)

My main experience is with a BCM rather than the older CECM/CCM set up so I can't comment on the pre-FL.

Interesting, my FL is MY10 so I guess I'll need a later BCM. Will have to check eBay and/or the scrapyard :D

  • 3 years later...

I have to persistently replace my DRL bulb on the near side as the centre contact wears away - its nice to see that I’m not the only one to have this problem!  The off side one has never failed. I’ll try soldering a small washer to the contact on the next one before I install it - it should wear better than the solder (need to do this properly, you don’t want the washer coming adrift and shorting out the terminals).

I’ve contemplated going to LEDs, but they’ll have the same problem - and I have read that some need load resistors, some need the polarity of the wires reversed, and I guess if you install load resistors, you lose the ‘bulb failed’ indication for that bulb.  Having said that, I’ve a pair of AUXITO LED bulbs (1156 white) from a well known on-line auction site which I’ll experiment with next time the near side DRL bulb fails.

P.S. what’s a BCM, and does the standard MDS on my Elegance have the facility to switch to LED bulbs?
