And how kosher are they?

Well, you can check on their reputation and also see if they are a real company.  Fruadsters don't tend to have high reputations.  The only time I bought something on eBay that never arrived, eBay gave me a full refund very quickly.

For example, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2018-VW-SKODA-SEAT-RNS-310-AMUNDSEN-V9-SD-CARD-FX-WEST-EUROPE-NAVIGATION/253257173432?epid=3011383415&hash=item3af74dc9b8:g:KogAAOSwXoxaahBH has a good reputation on nearly 600 transactions.  He also sells one for the RNS 315, same price.

  • So anything I sell on Ebay, sometimes on behalf of a group I'm involved in, is stolen? That comment is inaccurate, obvously incorrect, and frankly quite insulting.

  • That's a bit clever. I think the next update is June so I may wait till then.

Downloaded maps on a cloned card.

How, please?

How much are they charging again? There's the clue right there.

Although why you've linked to that particular map is a bit of a mystery. It's for the RNS310 whereas the discussion is about Amundsen Media maps which are free to download anyway.

Because OP wants a spare card!  I gave one link as example of their being available at reasonable cost.  I'm trying to help.  Can you explain how cards are cloned?

Same as everything on ebay. It's all stolen.

I reckon most items for sale on eBay are brand new and from respectable retail companies or firms.  It's a 'go-to' place even if you just want to check prices.

added 'eBay' for clarity

Oh get over yourself. Clearly it was a comment in response you your question "How kosher are they?". You question how something bought on ebay might possibly not be legal, and then have the gall to question a throw away comment?

The OP wants (or wanted) a spare card for an Amundsen Media system, so linking to a card for an RNS310 is clearly not relevant. Unless you're party to some information which is beyond the scope of my understanding.

Cards for the RNS310  (Amundsen) and RNS315 (Amundsen +) are not valid for an Amundsen Media system. Any genuine Skoda or VW card will work in the Media system as long as it's for a Media system (not an RNS310 for example), just buy one from ebay, new or used it doesn't matter, download the maps from Skoda website, place them on said card, and carry on.

I could do, but given that such discussions are frowned upon by admin I'm not prepared to.

Also, explaining the procedure would take up a good bit of my time and keyboard use. Lets just say some clever people in the far east spent a good few years learning how SD cards work and what gets hidden in the "Secure Data" section of an SD card, and having reverse engineered it they're now in a position to buy blank SD cards, print off a genuine looking label, and load data on which will work as a genuine card does.

OK.  Fair enough.  I certainly don't support piracy.  Thanks for all the info.  I've just bought a Yeti Outdoor but managed the updates with no problems.

Yes, all I wanted was a spare SD card to update the maps myself to keep the original one safe and untouched.

I see no need for Skoda to keep it all in house and I refuse to spend even £29 on a card that should cost £10 max.

Honestly, just format your existing card (back up the maps you currently have if you like), download and install the new maps onto the card (if you use a MAC then be careful, there's some issues with such machinery), and carry on. If it goes wrong then reformat the card and reinstall the old maps. Nothing lost.

Yes.

In theory....

It's not the card you are paying for, but the data on it. It's like buying a book or newspaper; the paper costs pennies, you are paying for the printed content....

That would still be £60 a year, every year.

But they give you the maps updates for free! You don't need to buy anything as you already have a card and the means to update it yourself?

They sell you a car, give you a satnav with maps on it (initial payment required if not standard specification), give you an sd card, supply an online database with all new updates free for download, and you still grumble about it?

It's my suspicion of how well it works and my initial post that was the issue.

I'm happy enough that my OP has been answered so thanks to those that tried to help.

When you say MAC do you mean an Apple Mac? If so then I have to say that I have had no problem with updating maps on my Apple iMac. Procedure is the same and as long as you format to correct format then everything is easy. I assume you have the same format choices with a Windows computer so nothing different really. However, I have a friend with a Mac and he doesn't even bother to reformat the SD card just drags everything off it and reloads the new maps without problem. Personally I prefer to reformat to insure it is a 'clean' load but I guess that's just choice.

It's well documented that when unzipping and transferring files to SD card using an apple imac that it can also load spurious files onto the SD card which prevent the system from reading it. If you haven't experienced it then you're fortunate.

Piracy? Isn’t that like VAG charging £180 for a disc to update Columbus/510 unit

That's a lot.  But we have to pay (indirectly) for someone to produce all this mapping data.  It's amazing that the public have relatively cheap access to all this data, especially stuff like Waze and Google which is free to us.  I have never had an installed satnav before, preferring to buy a Tomtom or Garmin with free updates.  So I was well chuffed when my Yeti has free updates.

With the latest OS you don't even need to unzip the files, the system does it for you and once downloaded the file simply has the maps folder inside ready to be dragged into the formatted SD card. I haven't seen any complaints from Mac owners - am I missing something and where have they been reported?

This thread lists all the q&a , and no doubt you'll find the relevant posts in there.
