Amber oil warning light

Featured Replies

My vRS TSFI likes a drink of oil  - it’s well within the Skoda tolerances, but I do need to top up the oil more regularly than I have on most of my previous cars.

While I try to remember to check my oil level every 6-7 hundred miles, it does occasionally get close to the min mark on the dip stick. What I have noticed though is the amber ‘top up’ warning never appears on the dash.

Obviously I don’t want to deliberately run it low to see if the light triggers, but does anyone know when the amber warning should be triggered?

It’s due to be serviced next week – is it worth getting this investigated?

Thanks folks

Are you hoping for some Warranty claim for a fix or goodwill on an engine rebuild or replacement?

Have you got a Warranty?

What kind of investigation do you want. Do you want an Official Oil Consumption test?

You say it uses oil, and not within Skoda tolerances.

So you should know exactly what it does use.

the 'May use as much as 0.5 litres in 1,000 km (621 miles) so  1 litre in 1,242 miles, does not give Skoda Tolerances,

just a figure VW gives for 3,4,5,6,8, 12 cylinder petrol and diesel engines from 44 kw up.

*Using 8 litres of oil between Fixed Service intervals for normal driving in UK weather and not towing across Alpine Passes in Summer

is not within any sensible car / engine manufacturers tolerances, just some idiots at VW's.!*

If you have the correct quantity of oil in and then use the car for 1,242 miles or so how much oil would it need to top it to the correct level?

If you use 5W 30 FS LL oil maybe change to 5w 40 FS (VW502 00) and see if you use less oil.

They are usually set such that you can lose quite a lot of oil before they are triggered. I doubt there's anything wrong with your sensor, but you could ask the servicing garage to eyeball the wiring/connector and report any faults that might be logged, if you don't have facilities to do those things yourself.

Thanks. My concern isn't for the  oil usage - I've not measured it accurately as I generally just top it up enough in to bring it back to the max mark on the dip stick when ever I test it.  On the couple of occasions it has got as low as minimum, I have done about 2000 miles. So while it seems quite a lot, I don't think Skoda would deem it excessive.

I am not looking for an engine rebuild or official oil consumption test. I am however wondering if the amber top up light should be coming on before the oil level gets to minimum on the dip stick.  I wondered it the level sensor might not be working correctly,

Cheeers

You can use 1 litre in 700 miles and Skoda would not deem it excessive, so you are right there.  (But then that is what they think is honesty.)

?

So how much are you topping up?

& is this at Normal Operation Temperature checks?

Plenty with 4 litre oil capacity can have no Low Oil level light or message show until over 1 litre low.

Some can have Low Oil Pressure warning first.

The 1.4 TSI Twincharger with 3.6 litre oil capacity can be 1.3 or more litre low and no Low Oil warning,

some more than 1.5 litre low and no warning.

so more than 1/3rd below capacity.

My 2010 VRS TSI 2.0 had an oil change in November, I keep an eye on it and checked last yesterday and it is still on max mark. Do different engines suffer more?

I am posting to give you a comparison, also trying to understand the "can use up to" what are the things that would make it use a lot of oil apart from an obvious oil leak?

I think I would consider any engine using that much oil was fooooooked regardless of vag being in denial and weren’t these engines replaced because of these problems after in came to light in the states  after class actions, can’t wait to see what happens with the new 1.5 Petrol  will it go the same way  as 2.0 ,1.8,1.4,1.2.

I’m not sure so sure the engine is knackered , as everything else about it is spot on – it starts always on the button, it performs well, no odd noises, there’s no puffs of blue smoke on starting it from cold, the spark plugs after 2+ years of use were dirty but had no traces of oil.

I've had the car for about three years now/20000 miles and the oil consumption hasn't changed in this time.

But the oil has to be going somewhere right enough!

Cheers

In the OP you say while you try to remember to check the oil 6-7 hundred miles and it does occasionally get close to the minimum mark.

?

So how much oil do you put in at that point to bring it up to Area A and to top it up?

Is this 5w 30 FS Long Life Oil you are using (VW504 00)

If you are putting in 0.5 litres after 6-7 hundred miles or even at 800 miles it is not within tolerances, or what VW / Skoda would like to pretend is acceptable.

As they know 0.3 litres used in 1,000 km (621 miles) is excessive oil use.

If you have been OK with the oil usage for 3 years / 20.000 miles then fair enough,

but from it being serviced to the next service how many litres of oil do you use?

Is it on Fixed Oil & Filter changes & done by a Dealership?

?

Do you check where the oil is when you cold the car and the engine / oil cold,

then where it is after a run at Operating Temperature?

hi - it's not that much. After 6-7 hundred miles I'd estimate I add less 1/4 of a litre. On the occasion it got to down to the mimimum mark, it'd done more miles but had been remiss in checking it,

The car is 10 years old and 80000 miles, well outside of any warranty or goodwill from Skoda.

It's on fixed service intervals, so standard 5W/30 oil.

Since it's being serviced next week. I'll mention the oil consumption to the garage,

Cheers

So if you only let it go down by 0.25 litre then there is little chance that a low oil level light or message would ever show.

As to your oil consumption and with a 10 year old 80,000 mile car it seems perfect.

As to the 5w 30 FS LL oil,   i would go to 5w 40 FS oil to VW 502 00, and get a long life engine, and forget VW's recommended Long Life Oil,

because as proven it is more likely to leads to Short Life engines if they are TSI's.

Obviously in the world of 'simply clever' a low oil warning light does not mean 'do not continue' just get oil in,

but as to VW in the USA, at least they do give some sensible info.

Cheers.  I don't expect the light to come on if the level has dropped a bit, but the one or two occasions it got down to close to the dip stick minimum mark I did expect it to come on.  Just trying to determine if it should!

Thanks

In old money 1/2 pint every 6/700 miles in ten yr old car with 80,000 isn’t too excessive for a vrs

Although the VRs petrol is a relatively high performance car, that does sound like excessive oil use for a car which has covered 80K miles, and it sounds comparable to a 1972 BMW 2002 which I used to own, prior to me replacing the valve stem seals and doing some extra work on the guides and cylinder head. After that it burned hardly any oil.

I would expect that from possibly a Mazda RX8 but not a modern petrol engine.

Did you see my post further up? The answer to your question is no.

2012 octavia vrs tsi

74000 miles and serviced a month ago in skoda garage. Oil light came on again today after 1225 miles. Checked dipstick and it was just at the bottom of the low level bend on the dipstick. Few good backroad blasts and a few motorway spins. Is this excessive consumption? Feckin seems like it

@bridgovrs

?

Did you dip the oil when you collected the car or got it home or anytime before now, because maybe it left the service low unless you know it never.

If it is drinking oil at that rate, then top of this section there is a thread that might show why.

Might not meet the Skoda 1L in 1000km but it seems excessive to me.  I have a 2011, 62,000 miles and I only put in 0.5 to 1L in 8000 miles and usually only a month or two before service due anyway.

But you know they are prone to this issue and the scraper ring clogging? Yours being 2012 should possibly even have the improved scraper rings but even the modified items did not totally eradicate the issue.

What oil are you using? You can try a 5W40 VW 502.00.

What has the frequency of oil changes been over the life of vehicle. Long change duration do the 2nd Gen EA888 no favours at all.

Was anual services between around 9000 to 1000 miles a year.

Oil has been the skoda recommended.

Anyone know what level in litres the oil hight comes on?

@ the level your low oil warning light came on.

?

How much oil was required when you added it to bring it to the top of area 'A' on the dipstick?

@bridgovrs

Did you dip the oil after the service either cold or as it should be @ operating temperature to see that it left the service correctly filled?

Edited by Roottootemoot

Never dipped it actually. Didnt get a chance to check it after i topped it up until earlier. i reckon i put in slightly less than half a litre of oil on the top up and after checking today it is up to just below A.

So not as bad as i thought oil burning wise. 0.5 of a litre over 1225miles (going by the manual) doesnt seem too excessive

Half a litre if the Low Oil warning light was on was not enough to have the correct quantity of oil in.

You need to check your oil at operating temp so maybe above 80*oC, near 90 would be good, on the flat and see where the oil is.

Top up if required but do not over fill and then see how things are over the next 1,240 miles or so.
