a "fixed" EA 189 vehicle cannot be re-mapped??

Featured Replies

just read this on another forum

'Once the fix is done it is done , the vehicles original map cannot be reinstalled due to the ECU being partially locked at a main dealers level of diagnostics ie via equipment that is linked into VAG UK system , a number of tuners and reputable map writers have been trying .

Know of a good few vehicles that had aftermarket remaps on prior to being fixed (quite often without the owners permission when the cars were in main dealers for servicing ) . As reputable tuners always save a copy of the vehicles original map prior to doing any tuning work the owners went back to the tuners who were unable to reinstall either the original factory map or the tuned map the vehicle had installed prior to the 'fix'.

The map writers have been struggling to get around the fix and writing new tuned maps that the ECU will accept."

I am sure that there is at least one supplier that has been mentioned on here that has been able to do this.

Can you link to this other forum?

it's on the Bike Forum UKGSer.com

mainly interested in BMW Bikes

Either a new remap will be needed (rather than reinstalling the original remap) or reinstall the original VAG ecu software and then reinstall the original map.

I am sure I have read either here or on another Yeti forum that the "fix" programme can be over-written with the original map.

That was my understanding - but the person on the other Forum said no and I am not an expert

I also remember the thread G think the remapper was around the Bristol area

*******!

My remap was done after the fix was applied.

Seems Brisky doesn't like the colloquial name applied to UKGSer subscribers ;-)

Some hard facts

I had my "fix" removed by Unit 18 in Milton Keynes cost of £50 took about a hour. Car felt more responsve

Later I had my car remapped by Shark performance 170+bhp and 420nm torque.

So whoever wrote that about it not being possible I talking spheroids.

Thank you.
I knew I had read that it was possible somewhere.

Forgive my ignorance but doesn’t the remap overcome the FIX

I'm not quite sure what you're asking, but I'll have a go...

As i understand it, the ECU had 2 maps on it; let's call them  map A which is the "normal" map and map B  which is the "cheat" map.

Then there was a little bit of code something along the lines of

If under test

then

   use map B

else

   use map A

With "the fix", the ECU was rewritten to simply have a "normal" map A  and the code was something along the lines of

use map A

so you always use the "normal" map irrespective of circumstances

What's rather unclear is whether the post-fix map A is exactly the same as the pre-fix map A

Having the fix "removed" should be a reinstatement of the 2 original maps and the same code logic; i.e. just putting the whole ECU back to how it was before.

When the mapper remaps it - whether they put it back to having 2 maps (the "cheat" and the "tuned") or just one (the "tuned") is up to them.  Revo leave you with 2 ("normal" and "tuned") but these are selected using a plug-in switch rather than the car deciding.  The key thing is that post-remap, the map you'll be running isn't the one that your dealer put in as part of the fix.

I was under the assumption that there would only be one map and that "under test" would be part of it.
The fix would then remove that part and also change other parameters such as timing and fuelling etc that will lead to future problems.

I know that some remappers have the facility to install other parts that will give the driver a choice of different maps for economy or performance etc, but not with just the standard ECU.

Hmm, you may be right - there's basically 2 ways to do the "under test" thing; 2 different maps or one map with different sets of parameters used to adjust things on the fly. So it's enther "use this map or that map" or it's "use this set of parameters or that set of parameters"

Depending on the ECU there may be room for multiple maps; the maps themselves aren't particularly big, but the memory on the ECUs is quite big (as it's relatively cheap these days).

The ECU will likely have a pointer to the start of the map, so if there are multiple maps then the pointer simply needs to be changed to point to one or the other.

On both of the Revo remaps I've had done (Octavia 1 1.9Tdi 110 & Yeti 2.0 170) they left me with stock and tuned maps on the OEM ECU.

I have the same from Shark but have 3 maps.

1 stock

2 tuned

3 immobilised

All activated/stored from a device that plugs into OBD port.

Going back to BillN_33 original post, I know Revo had to do some work on the map file they install on my fixed car; they had the map for the ECU without fix and needed to tweak it for the ECU with fix. It may have been that the tuned map needed to be located in a slightly different area of the ECU or whatever.

As above - mine had the EA189 update and was then driven for a few thousand miles. Frustration ensued and I had it stage 1 mapped by Ben at Shark.

It seemed a straight forward process and I recall being offered the option of either "rolling back" the car to a pre-update map, or performance mapping it (based on a pre-update map).
