Temporary tuning

Featured Replies

Hi,

Will be getting a fair bit of work done to the car over time, but kinda wondering about a short-term (month or thereabouts) analogue resistor mod.

Bit like one of these: http://www.hhtuning.co.uk/pd1tuning.htm

Although that one is WAY too expensive for what it is.

Spotted something on Stu's site as well:

There are a few others mentioned.

I'm after one for about 20 quid for a few weeks, any recommended ebay sellers etc?

It'll probably cause your engine to complain via the little light on the dash :thumbdwn:

Got VAGCOM but under what conditions will CELL come up ?

Don't waste your money mate, wouldn't risk messing things up especially if it's only for a few weeks. It'll make you really appreciate CC2 when it gets done :D

Go for it :D Best bang for buck mod I did and as your car is newer than mine, the CEL may come on if the fuel sensor notices some erroneous values. It will depend on the value of the resistor in the tuning box. Perfectly safe to just clear the log with VAG-COM :D

May just end up buying a digi one and flogging it cheap to someone lucky on the site - can't hurt :)

Update --> Bought a Dragon digital tuning box, looks easy to fit and I'll flog it for cash in a few months, should be reliable and it will be a bargain for someone

D'oh, wish I'd spotted this thread earlier as I have a digi box from HHtuning for sale.

They are not adjustable in the same way as Dragon as they need to be plugged in to a PC/laptop and don't just have jumpers like Dragon

I've had the map/program on it tweaked a few times. It is fairly strong and now kicks in at 1680rpm and cuts out at 4500rpm, smoothing the torque curve. I've found this to be the best setup with it

Only other thing to not is th trip computer will read incorrectly.

Didn't know about that - is that the mpg part of it?

Yeah it does, mainly coz it thinks a different effective amount of fuel is going in (in turn due to fooling the ECU into thinking temperature is out)

But doesn't the ECU still control the amount of fuel being injected (based on feedback from the sensor)?

Yep. Didn't you notice that the mpg seemed to go up when it was fitted?

The ECU still thinks its injecting the same amount of fuel when really it injecting more.

Mine improved by a couple of mpg on the trip computer and my at the pump figure was about the same, maybe a little better. Certainly didn't go up massively

Chris

You will notice the difference....I have had three different ones on three different cars (all Dragon tuning) and not had any lights come on ..........It will get faster as time goes on and the ecu learns ...the Dragon one on my superb pd130 came out at 175.5 bhp and 288.6lb/ft

AFAIK the ECU will know it is injecting more fuel - that's the whole idea of it.

It recieves the signal back telling it what temp the fuel is and then varys the fueling accordingly.

That was my understanding too :D

Yes true - however it probably compensates for the volume expansion of the fuel at higher temperatures, so by fooling the sensor it will get that wrong too.

Either way it's fiddling the sensors so if it gets it wrong, that's a side-effect I can live with :D

  • 2 weeks later...

Mine will be returned as it 1) had faulty cable and 2) I've got CC1 so no point now...
