Rattle on Start Up 1.2 TSI

Featured Replies

Hi,

have a rattle on start up of engine.  Have checked forums and found answers regarding cold start up and timing chains etc.  But my Roomster TSI engine can rattle sometimes and not others.  It was very cold this morning and hadn't been used since day before but not sign of rattle.  It just comes and goes but only rattles on some start ups.  So, I'm assuming it can't be a stretched chain as I guess it would do it every time?  It has been serviced regularly and with oil change etc.   It was stated in previous forum that TSI engines before 2011 had this rattle and sometimes caused by stretched inferior chain.  My car is 2012 reg  but perhaps engine was made in 2011, not sure.

In the service book the engine  code is CBZB.

Anyway, thought I'd ask here first before I ring dealer.   When I'm driving there is no rattle so  I assume it's ok, but not certain!   Any feedback would be great!

Thanks,

John

Have a look at the thread in the Fabia Mk2 section, there are posts in it today.

I have a 63 plate and it always has done since new. I parked nose in on my drive up against the wall of my house and that amplified the noise. Not only was a rattle but a knock as well. Both noises only last a second so I assume it is the tappets receiving the oil supply and the high pressure fuel supply system. There is no suggestion of problems with the timing chain as tickover is just about heard inside the cabin and engine is very smooth. As you say sometimes it does it and sometimes not, hot or cold starts. Don't worry.

^^^ Correct, do not worry with one built after the Upgrade of the chain tensioner.

With those before, check out what you have, and check out the rattling fuel pipes as well and that easy fix.

It is in the multi page thread in the Fabia mk2 section on '12tsi rattle'.

@edbostan has described exactly the rattle produced by my 63 plate Roomster on start-up.

The rattle seemed less evident and occurred less frequently after an oil change.

Nothing to worry about with upgraded chain tensioner.

So from what you say my roomster would need an upgrade of chain tensioner, unless it was manufactured with the upgraded version..... Does the garage have to look at it to find out?    What sort of cost might it be to have upgrade done?   Guess it would be better to do that than leave it and later something worse happen!

Not sure where multi thread fabia mk 2 is but put in a search and did find something on petrol pipe, (and chain)  which someone had when stopping at a junction...but the TSI in my car only rattles for 1 or 2 seconds on start up intermittently and started it this morning without any noise from cold.....

So it seems the most important thing to do is to find out what version of engine, with or without modified tensioner and maybe that depends when the engine was manufactured,..... the engine code CBZB doesnt give me much clue about that but maybe the skoda dealer with vin number may find the date?  or maybe not!

From my experience with timing chain issues the noise is present all the time, not just on start up. I ran a noisy Triumph Dolomite duplex timing chain for thousands of miles before the car was written off.

thanks for the replies...... I rang Skoda dealer up today to see if they would know if my engine was ok re chain tensioner or chain....after reading quite a few of threads regarding this issue I got the impression that engines manufactured pre- 2012 had the inferior chains and or problem chain tensioners and even that Skoda had modified engine after 2011-2012 so that oil chambers better arranged etc.....but maybe I misread or didn't quite get the thread properly as when I contacted Skoda dealer, and  referred via master tech, they said there wasn't any modified engine but only a modified chain tensioner (not sure about the chain).

On the other hand Awaoffski you mention that  "Correct, do not worry with one built after the Upgrade of the chain tensioner."  Which sounds like youre saying that some engines from a certain time were already built with the modified bits......  If that's the case then I'm confused about what my dealer said to me!

So, from dealer point of view I may need the upgraded tensioner anyhow, though maybe its not yet bad enough to do that,  I asked about the cost and they said to check it would be 6 hours @ £79.50 an hour plus vat...so not far off £600     I darn't ask about labour cost to actually fit the tensioner but maybe they would include that in the labour charge, so just tensioner cost on top.  They did also say that they may be able to assess the problem on start up without taking it apart...but as my problem is intermittent its unlikely to make the noise on the occasion or occasions they start it.

@Robjon & Awaoffski   you both mention nothing to worry about with upgraded tensioner.  If  tsi engines with new tensioner weren't modified as the dealer said then the only way forward is to have it done to be sure.  But, if the dealer has given me wrong info and there were tsi engines modified say 2011-2012 then obviously they may have mislead me.   Perhaps Awaoffski you can clarify whether there were modified engines or not.

If edbostan is right, and there is nothing to worry about, I could spend an awful lot of money for nothing!

Cheers

Thanks for the link.... it seems then that they had brought modified chains/tensioner into production from what i read.  It also said that someone had identified his engine (code) with a TPI and discovered that his engine did have the faulty parts.  There was a link on thread to a TPI so i had a look and it said there was a production change 2011 and that  there was an optimized chain in production identified by engine numbers   CBZ* 462774 (Mlada Boleslav). • CBZ* 714253 (Salzgitter).   My engine number is CBZBC16080.   The number is lower than those listed so I would assume that my TSI engine would have not the modified chain etc...or do the letters after CBZ  which are BC make any difference to the overall number?

From what I've read it seems that my dealer is not aware of the production change (or TPI) ..and someone also mentioned that various dealers not aware of TPI anyway...

So, do I go with the numbers or do the letters BC indicate later engine model with, or maybe indicate that my TSI engine ok with chain tensioner ok?  or perhaps those number only refer to different car Polo....

My brain is becoming pretty frazzled by now, but trying to find out as much as I can in case I can find out if my Roomster's engine is a problem one re chain/tensioner or not before going down an expensive route or perhaps trading it in!
