1.0 TSI - DSG

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I'm currently waiting for my Octavia Estate SE Technology 1.0 TSI - DSG  to be delivered. But i'm having second thoughts as  from experience small engines seem to struggle paired to auto gearboxes.

I would have gone for a bigger engine but we got a bit of a bargain through the NHS lease scheme.

Does anybody here have this matchup? How does the Engine and gearbox match up?

Welcome.

A perfect match,

hence in the Karoq, Golf, Ateca, Arona, Fabia / Rapid, and other VW Group vehicles, established and new.

VW Group have messed up big style if they have got it wrong.

?

What kind on small engines and Autobox have you had found wanting?

DSG is pretty good, haven't driven the 1.0 TSI with it, but combined with the 1.2TSI it was pleasant enough. Unless you're completely against an auto box (which I'm assuming you're not since you ordered one) then it's perfectly fine.

DSG is technically not an auto box in the truest sense like a torque converter or CVT. Instead it's an automated manual. Perhaps that's why it works well with small engines compared to the other small engines you've experienced with autoboxes.

As above, some examples of the poor ones you've experienced would be useful for some context.

I’d guess they’ll be regular auto boxes on small NA engines.

If you are having 2nd thoughts why not pop into the nearest Skoda or VW garage & ask for a short test drive in a 1L or 1L DSG.

I think the 1L TSI will suprise you as an engine (small turbocharged petrol engines are another world even compared to 2L NA engines from the past).

Can't comment on the VW group 1.0 turbo, but I currently have the Ford 1.0 Ecoboost paired with an auto box and it's a hoot!  I imagine the VW group pairing is much the same.  I can't see any reason why the engine would struggle, if anything it'll be happier because it's more in control!

I test drove a fabia estate with the 1.0tsi and DSG box.  I was really surprised how well they were paired.  Good around town and motorway.

I thought it was a cracking engine.

We have a 1.2TSi Yeti DSG which has slightly less power and torque than the 1.0TSi and in a slightly heavier body. It's a great combination although the Yeti's aerodynamics means economy isn't great at motorway speeds.

I wouldn't worry too much about performance, the gearbox is as crisp as a manual and far faster to change so in the real world away from the lights you get a real advantage.

You can't compare them to small normally aspirated engines with old torque converter autos.

I too am waiting on a Octavia 1.0 TSI DSG (SE Tech) and I had the same quandry when I was ordering - I thought I wanted the 1.4 (now 1.5) TSI but I test-drove the 1.0 TSI (manual) at the sales guy's recommendation and was pleasantly surprised. My car will be used sparingly for relatively short commuting runs (with the occasional long-distance journey) so I didn't need a high-spec but the DSG and adaptive cruise will be helpful additions. I'm replacing a 10-year old 2.0 diesel Mondeo and the Octavia (unsurprisingly) felt a lot nicer to drive in every respect. On a related note, I ordered at the end of Dec and have not heard anything since - I'll chase the dealer tomorrow but it's looking like a late March delivery, I'd expect.

Back in the day, conventional auto boxes relied on torque converters which sapped loads of power and the % being taken by the auto box with a small engine was significant.  Also, 3 gear ratios was the norm and 4 a bit of an exception.  Modern autos, particularly DSGs (which as said technically aren’t automatics) sap minimal power over a manual and boxes now have 6, 7 and even 8 gear ratios.  This ensures the small engine is always in the right ratio for the moment.

I’ve just bought a 1.2tsi Yeti DSG, having been a mechanic for Nissan for years I have driven many 1.0L CVT Micra’s etc and I can tell you the DSG gearbox is amazing compared to them.  Having currently owned a 1.8 zafira manual and a 1.6fsi manual Oct I can say that the 1.2 Yeti DSG seems far spritelier and doesn’t have any issues getting through the gears.

Thanks for the replies, sounds like I will be totally fine :) the previous small car autos have been holiday rentals, (Micra, Polo mk4 etc).

Looking forward to getting the car

Have you had an update from the dealer?  We ordered ours in November (lease company gave an estimated delivery date of MAY!!!)

Spoke to them yesterday - build date is next week (I think he said week 9 but I could be wrong) with estimated delivery a few weeks after (mid-to-late March?). I have to drop in my trade-in at the end of the month because it's tax/MOT runs out - not sure if I can get a loaner to cover the few weeks shortfall, although I'm not desperate for it (wife has a Nissan Leaf that I can use).

Dropped my trade-in off the other day and got an update off the dealer - car is built and has left the factory (according to the tracking system) and still expecting a mid-March delivery. Hopefully the snow will have gone by then.

The tiny 1.0 TSI produces more torque than most normally aspirated 2.0 engines. I had a manual one as a courtesy car during my VRS service, and it really didn't feel lacking in any way. It was also very refined for a 3-pot.

mine also spins nicely to 6k+ when everything's warm.. it's a great engine and suits the Octy very well IMO.

I have the 1.0 manual and though I love the engine, there's a lot of shifting between 1st and 2nd gear in low speeds, the 1st speeds rev interval i spretty narrow. I haven't tested the DSG but I believe it would be more comfortable, at least not having to change gears yourself. Also, the ACC would work better with an auto i think.

Thats Great! we are still waiting for our lease company to provide us with details (it's still looking like May unfortunately) I'm getting impatient.  Did you add any optional extras?

That was one of my main reasons in getting the Auto, stop start with a small turbocharged engine doesnt sound like fun haha.

No optional extras - I thought the SE Technology was reasonably well-equipped as standard?

113bhp is higher than most of the cars I considered sporty back in the 70's

I think with figures like that  you should have no problem.

I think you will be surprised how good a combination it is

(will be a bit tight for first 1000 miles, will use more fuel initially (but will do that in cold weather anyway), might be reluctant to go into 7th gear below 40mph until it has loosened up, but afterwards is brilliant

Very free running engine, and DSG always keeps it in power band of the engine.

I found my 1.2 was doing over 100 gear changes on a 30 minute commute with a few traffic lights, (from 1 to 7 then back down), would never do that many changes to optimise revs in a manual.

Has more power than many 2 litre engines of 1970s so not sluggish.

Maybe its the optional extras that are causing the delay (they have moved the order to June now) , ordered ours with Rear view Camera, Heated folding Mirrors, Tinted windows, variable boot floor, bigger wheels and silver roof rails.

Finally picked my car up this afternoon. After driving a Mondeo for the best part of the last 10 years, getting into a new car (even a relatively "modest" spec like the 1.0TSI SE Tech DSG) is always an eye-opener to how much car technology has moved on! It's like being in a high-tech limo by comparison! Just the novelty of having built-in Bluetooth is all a bit much. I went for Quartz Grey and I quite like it in the flesh, suits the understated nature of a (non-VRS!) Octavia.

Once you have had a chance to drive it a bit, can you let me know what it's like? I'm about to pull the trigger and can't decide between manual and DSG

Quartz Grey for me too!

Cheers

I had a 1.0tsi manual (Fabia) as a loan car whilst mine was serviced.  It was painfully hard work in traffic light queues as had to keep changing between 1st and 2nd.  Although it revs very freely it means you need to change gear frequently to optimise it.

Unless you live in a very quiet part of the country, pay the extra and choose the DSG, it suits the engine, keeps it in sweet spot. It will save fuel too so will get back some of the extra cost.  The DSG is brilliant with this engine.

If you are keeping it, buy the 5 year warranty (has to be done before registration), unlike a manual clutches are covered
