Clutch slip??? Or something else???

Featured Replies

Odd thing: when accelerating between 2000rpm and 2500rpm, the engine lags as if I've hit a serious flat-spot.  However, after a brief delay, the revs rise (to 3000-3500) before settling back and I pick up speed again.  During this rev rise, the road speed does not increase, so drive must be interrupted.

This only happens in this rev-range but can be in any gear.  It doesn't ALWAYS do it but more often than not; there's no pattern of road, incline etc.

The car's only done 52000 miles so I can't believe the clutch is going.  I can't think what else it CAN be, though...  Could it be the coil pack or a blocked injector???

I've tested the clutch by taking up drive with the handbrake firmly on - nothing seemed amiss. I'm going to pour some BG44-K into the tank; see if that makes a difference..

All thoughts welcome.

I'm afraid it sounds like the clutch. Test by driving on a clear road at about 30 mph . Dip the clutch so it slips (with a tiny bit of power on) - then floor the throttle and whilst fully releasing the clucth. If the revs don't snap bak down to where they should be then the clutch is on it's way out.

Hello Noddy defo dmf our Honda ate its clutch at 25,000 miles similar scenario, OK on flat then any loading, once warm, allowed slipping but would pull out of our down hill drive when cold. When our independent  mechanic stripped out the clutch plate wasn't far off being toast, the tension springs had so much slop it was frightening. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news....

Yes; having taken it out for a test-drive with a mechanic, it's looking like a new clutch.

Now the key question: does the 1.8TSi have a DMF? Some garages think no and are quoting c. £425; others think yes and are quoting c. £700.

Research on the net is inconclusive but tilting towards yes. Bugger.

Anyone able to confirm?

Yes - as per the other thread yes it does - although the 1.8tsi is normally fairly light on it. Your's may be still worth doing though as it has been remapped.

Make sure the conentric slave cylinder is changed at the same time as the rest of the clutch (these can fail and are buried inside the bell housing!) - cheap whilst in bits (can be part of the kit of parts!)

[EDIT] With your extra horses on board is it worth getting a sports clutch fitted?

Hi, chaps,

Currently broken down, waiting for Green Flag by the side of the A442 in Telford.

Lost all drive; cannot now select a gear; pedal's gone limp... :crying:

Oh dear, sorry to hear that

I think it has just diagnosed itself though - my money is on the failure of the concentric slave cylinder. The cluth slip is probably caused by brake fluid contamination.

Outcome much the same though - gearbox off time.
