2018 New MOT Test Requirements

Featured Replies

There are a few threads in the General Car Char section on the Proposals / Changes for the UK MOT from 2018.

There is no new equipment at MOT stations.   Nothing other than an Examiners eyes to see 'any visible smoke;.

The DVSA / DfT were trying to hire Monkeys to observe the tail pipes but they were all contracted to VW Group for sniffing fumes experements.

Just to clarify, Excess handbrake travel HAS always been a fail, the exact wording is "little/or no reserve travel", barke fluid contamination we can't check as there is no equipment to check it., brake pad warning light's normally come on when the with about 3mm of pad left, the fail criterier is 1.5mm or about the thickness of a 5p.

Oil leak's most of the vehicle i check have oil leaks.

Reverse light on cars post 59 plate, all cars from about the early 1980's have reverse lights so thats stupid.

ABOVE all they will need to retrain thousend's of us MOT tester's before bringing in the changes so we all singing from the same song book.

Draft of the forthcoming manual can be studied here if anyone is keen to read the details.

At least now if it looks like a steering wheel could detach and if it is not a quick release one that will be deemed 'Dangerous'.

So now are 'Failed' vehicles going to have to be collected from a MOT station and not allowed to drive away?

Mine failed 10 days ago.

The DVLA shows still at MOT'd till 1st March and they auto renewed the VED with the price increase to the Direct Debit.

DVLA MOT History site shows the MOT failure.

I've always deemed it dangerous and put a dangerous marker on the VT30, us testers have always been able to do that since computerisation came in.

I think they will still be able to be driven away to a place of repair, as a lot of testing centre's are just that, Testing centre's

Yes people will still be able to drive away with vehicles deemed 'Dangerous' or not able to continue testing because not fit to be,

or simply dangerous.

But then the DVSA / DfT have said before they should not be driven away on the road.

Not that 'Test Centre staff' can seize the vehicle, and are they supposed to call the police.

Lots to be sorted out.

Like actually taking MOT's seriously.

Up to just a month ago they still wanted first MOT's in the UK @ 4 years.

Gas Boiler Service Engineers can condemn a unsafe boiler, put a big sign on it and switch it off until action is taken.

There's no terminology or action of "condemning" a boiler (safe or otherwise). All the Gas Safe operative can legally do is inform the responsible person and (if they agree) disconnect it and label it. If the responsible person refuses to allow this then there's nothing the engineer can do. However, if deemed "Immediately Dangerous" the engineer can contact the Gas Emergency Service Provider and they have legal power of entry to make the situation safe.

Nicely worded by you, and obviously correct, sorry for my error,

and the error maybe of the words others that say the boiler is now condemned as dengerous.

Why is it stupid to check that the reversing light is working - or have I misunderstood your point?

That is likely, 'stupid to not have to check them on cars pre 59 plate if they are fitted with reversing lights'

But then Front Fog Lights and Spot / Driving Lights have never been part of a MOT examination when fitted.

Still not from May 2018.
