Skoda Octavia SE (2017) Wing Mirrors are too dark at night.

Featured Replies

Hello Fellow Octivia Owners...

I have a Skoda Octavia Diesel Hatchback 2.0 TDI CR SE Technology 5DR 18 which I have had since December 2017 from new, I absolutely love this car apart from one thing, the wing mirrors are so dark at night time I cant see anything in them, I can see lights of cars but because it is so dark I have no way to judge how far or close any car is from me, and when it rains and there is rain droplets on the wing mirrors at night time, I its even more restrictive apart from blobs of lights...  The mirrors I have are heated but I cant see anything in the options to change anything on the mirrors...

Does anyone else have this issue or does anyone know how or what I can do to change this, its most annoying and for me dangerous... I have had a couple of friends in the car who have commented on the same thing without me saying anything to them..

many thanks

RS

If I am right, the wing mirrors have the same function like the rear view mirror where the darkness is changed based on the brightness of the lights behind you.

Is your rear view mirror brightness working OK for you or is this also too dark?

If you press the switch under the rear view mirror in the middle it should disable this function & put it back as a standard mirror.

(I'm not sure if this would also affect the wing mirrors but my guess is it would)

Perhaps the light detection is not working correctly & hence causing your problem.

Hi Gabbo

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me.

The rear view mirror is also dark, there is no button on the rear view mirror to disable anything...?

I have looked in all the menus on the Columbus 9.2" and cant see anything to change this, there are options to automtically turn on the heated wing mirrors but thats it...

Thank you.

spelling mistake

I'm not sure this is part of std SE spec (someone will correct me) - I was under the impression it was part of an option pack.

Yes just like your rear-view mirror, the door mirrors are auto-dip as well - the door mirrors work work off the interior mirror (apparently).  I have them on my car and must say they're one of the best things on it - never had auto-dipping door mirrors before on any car at any price!

I certainly don't have any issues with my mirrors, they should only darken when light shines from behind. Sounds like your sensor isn't working correctly. Might be a warranty job. I'm not aware of any button to switch the system off but covering the sensor should do the same trick.

Now you're going to ask where the sensor is? I don't know. In previous cars there's usually a very small dot/lens on the mirror - placing your finger over it disabled the system. Not sure if it's visible on the current batch of auto-dip mirrors but it's usually located in one of the corners. If nobody can tell you exactly where it is, trial and error should find where it's located. Covering it with a piece of tape should do the trick but as I say, the dealer would be my first port of call.

You’ve not got a dashcam with the screen facing the sensor on the back of the rear view mirror?

Hi Kenny

Yes I do have a dashcam that is just below my rear view mirror, stuck to the windscreen?

I have just been to my car and there is some kind of sensor on the back of the rear view mirror, but no buttons, do you know what this is for?  If I cover this with black tape do you think it might solve my issue and do you think this is connected to my wing mirrors?

I thought the idea of auto dimming mirrors was to activate when light shines into the rear view mirror from the rear, however the sensor if facing the front of the car?

Thanks

This warning is in the Yeti and Kodiaq owners manual, suspect the Octavia will have similar.

WARNING
■ The illuminated display of an external navigation device can lead to op- erational faults to the automatic dimming interior mirror – risk of accident. ■ Automatic mirror dimming only operates correctly if the light striking the sensor is not affected by other objects.

If the sensor is covered in any way, the mirrors will be darkened, try and keep all the sensors unimpeded as glare from the dash cam screen, shadow from the dash cam etc can cause issues for you.

I will change my dashcam so the screen turns off and see if that makes any difference this evening...

Thank you

On my car the rear view mirror like is in this photo:

I always assumed the light sensor was the small hole on the right next to the green light indicating is it active.

However, a quick look at this video seems to suggest the light sensor is actually on the rear of the Mirror:

You learn something new every day...!

There are 2 light sensors in the mirrors - one forward facing to detect ambient lighting and one rearward facing to detect the lights of cars behind.

Only when the forward facing one is dark and the rearward one is light will the mirrors be dimmed.

If it's like my Mk2 Octavia, there is a small push-button switch under the bottom edge of the mirror to switch the auto dimming off/on. A dim green light indicated the system was on.

And yes, if either sensor is covered, then there will be a problem.
