Bang when the wheels skip under acceleration

Featured Replies

This happens in our Superb in the wet when pulling away, especially on uneven road surface and every time if accelerationg over a gap/expension joint in the road at low speed.

The bang is caused by the engine rocking back suddenly to the limit inside the dogbone mount underneath the engine.

It seems to be partly due to the choice of tyres.

Anyone experience this in a Karoq?

Easily cured with the 034 motorsport dogbone alloy insert

Are you sure that the bang is not caused by the XDS system braking a slipping wheel under acceleration? I get this within my Octavia VRS, and the bang always occurs when traction is lost under acceleration on slippery surfaces (mostly when wet).

Just turn off the TC (Traction control) when the road surface and the tyres mean you will get this bang as the rubbish tyres spin and the brakes nip and try to get you traction.

No need to replace the engine mounts or anything like that, just replace the crap tyre VW Group fit as OEM.

Or drive easier on poor surfaces / traction / friction with the wrong tyres and the electrics will not interfere.

The problem is (in my experience) it doesn’t just happen when ‘pressing on’, it can happen at any time (I never drive mine with WOT anyway) it wouldn’t be all the time either, probably once or twice in every 500 miles.

So on your basis I could spend £740 for a set of 19” Michelins (or £600 on any other decent brand) when the OE Pirellis have just 1mm of wear on them, or spend £50 for a 034 mount that cures the problem.

Guess which option I went for?

If you buy a £20,000 - £30,000 new car or 'rent one for a few years'

and as soon as you have run in the tyres and brakes there are bangs from the drive train because VW Group Engineers heve specced unsuitable engine mounts, you drop off the car and tell the Dealer that sold it to get them to fix that.

As to the XDS / XDS+ and TC, & Crap tyres, the issue is well known. near 15 years now.

Lots of people might be the registered keeper for 2 or 3 years but do not own the car and will not own it when the Manufacturers Warranty

expires so are not expected to pay to upgrade engine mounts, or even to fit non factory approved hardware or even software.

Re: Superb banging noise - I agree with Gizmo's assessment. This was also confirmed by my local dealer and Skoda UK.

But back to my original question. Has anyone experienced this issue in a Karoq?

There is one junction near me which as a blind brow to the right, so exit needs to be quick, my last previous Roomster and two Yetis have banged on accelerating hard here, my new Karoq did the same on Friday.  My Mk1 Escort doesn't do it, my Manta and Rover P6b V8 didn't do it, (notice a pattern here). I haven't tried it in my newly acquired Mk1 Golf Cabriolet yet. I regard modern cars to be white goods. the banging only appears to occur on rougher, not loose, tarmac. I live with it. The Yetis were on Dunlops, crap, Pirellis, good, and the Kuroq is on Bridgestones, no judgement yet. I never have a car long enough to wear a set of tyres out, so they come and go on what was delivered.

I have driven the 190ps DSG Diesel & Petrol SEAT Ateca and no banging front end but then they are AWD even with crap tyres.

I have driven the Karoq 150ps DSG AWD 2.0TDI on the rubbish Dueler tyres and had no issues,

but then it can not pull the skin off a rice pudding and i switch off TC anyway as a default as i do Stop / Start.

Dealer was kind enough to let me 'test' a Karoq again today with a view to seeing if it did 'bang' under fast accel and/or uneven road surface (it wasn't wet today).

Basically, the Karoq doesn't do this anywhere near as badly as my Superb.  It's still there slightly but far less of a 'bang' and not obtrusive at all.  On pulling out of a junction under partial lock I could make the tyres skip but no bang - this definitely sets off a bang or two in the Superb.

I'm beginning to think that there might be a fault with the Superb, although when I first had the car the supplying dealer had it up on the ramp but couldn't find anything wrong.

Anyway, I'm much happier now and looking forward to taking delivery.

My Karoq has done this since new on damp or wet roads, I took the issue up with Skoda and they appeared to accept I had a problem but after approx 4 months of going to and fro they issued me a statement that the car was performing normal and that was the end of it, no help or further investigation and was also told if I was to fit the 034 Dogbone insert that is widely used on VW, Audi, etc with the same build platform and I have any failure that could be considered as possibly a result of fitting it my warranty would be null and void. All the reports I have read on the 034 insert say it does no damage and cures the problem with no added vibration transfer in to the vehicle, as soon as the warranty is up I will be fitting one.

So what is the 034 insert. Where does it go, what does it do?

Why not just google 034 insert, plenty pictures, even a how to install video.

034 MOTORSPORT INSERT

https://034motorsport.co.uk/034motorsport-billet-aluminum-mqb-lower-dogbone-mount-insert/

if you go to this website you will find all the information regarding the insert, it is made by a US company and they don’t have much information on Skoda application but the Skoda platform is used on many cars including the Skoda Karoq and the Skoda Octavia including the VRS, this website is in the UK and is a distributor of 034 motorsport products. There are 2 variants, an early and a late version, the website shows how to identify them.

The modification uses the lower insert for general use and you can also get an upper insert to use in addition for use for track and performance reasons, but for normal road car use they just recommend the lower insert.

There is a member by the name of GIZMO earlier in this thread that mentions the 034 insert.

if you do a search on you tube for 034 dog bone insert there are a few videos posted showing information and how easy it is to fit the lower insert.

I hope you or any other members find this information helpful.

They also say the 4x4 platform doesn’t suffer in the same way and 4x4 owners don’t need the insert.
