Replacement tyres for Continentals.

Featured Replies

It’s time to buy 2 new fronts for my April 2017 Superb L&K. Currently I have Continental Contact 5s. 235/45 R 18W (94w)

They don’t do the 5s now only 6s. The cheapest I can find is £152 each fitted. That’s a bit more than I wanted to pay. Can anyone recommend some cheaper alternatives. I don’t want ultra cheap just a bit cheaper. Also the 6s I have seen at Asda say XL and are 98Y. Does that matter? I have gone around 16k on the first set. Thanks.

Sorry for suggesting a more expensive option, but I can’t see past Michelin CrossClimate+ at the moment. Black Circles have them at £175 (£160 without fitting) and the CC40 code gets you £40 off when buying 4. I appreciate it’s quite a bit more, but if you normally switch to winter tyres it saves the hassle and associated costs. It’s considerably safer if you don’t use winter tyres… genuine year round premium performance.

Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance.  Great tyres and offer better performance than their eco naming would suggest.

I went from Sport Contacts on my Leon FR to the GY EG Performance and felt they were better in every respect.

Thanks but can’t seem to get them in my spec

If you’re a long way from needing the other two then IMHO Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 (even with it's age) is a better tyre… cheaper, quieter and more grip

EDIT: Y is a higher rating so perfectly OK.

Hi. Thanks for the reply.  Why only if I a long way from needing the other 2?

You wouldn’t want differing levels of grip front to back. The CrossClimates will be easily as good (maybe better) most of the year, but much, much better than the Contis when it goes below 8c. I personally wouldn’t want that mix through next winter… would also miss out on £40 off.

If you think you’ll need another two before next winter then go for them and put the new ones on the back… same again when you get a second pair

Think I may go with the f1s. Don’t need to change the others for quite a while yet.

Just 16k and you need to change already? Are they down to 2mm?

Yes. Lower than 2mm about 1.7mm :-0  lots of twisty country roads where I live now.

Not tested myself. A garage told me when I asked.

I’m currently trying to wear out a horrible set of P7s… restraint was needed to resist getting the CrossClimates during the recent weather. Might hit 2mm all round in just 10k on these Pirellis :D

Here is a test that compares the F1s to your Contact 5s:

Thanks. Is it ok if I have the xl version if the remaming  2 tyres aren’t xl?

national tyres seem to be the cheapest by me

Yup… extra load isn’t required, but it’s a higher rating so perfectly fine for insurance etc. It Just means a stronger sidewall/general construction that allows for usage on a heaver vehicle. It may mean a slightly higher pressure is needed and can make the tyre slightly heavier and noisier, but not always the case. Normally makes for a sportier feel due to the stiffer sidewall. Generally more options and a better price for XL, but you can get them in standard rating too.

Looks like the standard ones are a little poorer on economy, but 1db quieter... at £131 fitted it’s a good deal. You could probably save a little with the XL by getting them fitted yourself, but National would be less hassle… hopefully

If your not sporty  a mid ranger would be ok , say avon , yokohamma . remember all tyres are ISO accredited standard in Europe. You cant buy a bad, dangerous tyre. You can however get a better tyre for the types of driving you do

Big miler , the eagles do the job, 30k on front wheel drive

P7's , yuck , noisy , twitchy

Bridgestone new potenzas R00 somethings are ok, quick wear though

Conti's are a good option on sport 3 if ye can get them, last 19k or more

BEST TYRE , Mitch sport 4's , Pricey but they wont fail you in most conditions aprt from ice and snow

I am currently looking for 2 on front I had to replace the original p7 ones due to a side wall blow after clipping a kerb and couldn’t find one so went with mich primacy 3 tbh not impressed have worn out badly done 16k and are at 2mm , so just looking at some khumo which I used to have on the Mindel and they were great I have found a local dealer for 98 but need to check which they are selling me. M8ght b worth a look
