Octavia III chain vs belt

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I'm looking for an Octavia III 1.4 TSI but I've read about some problems regarding the 1.4 engines running on chain. Could you tell me if you experienced any issues with those engines ? Would be better to buy an engine running on belt?

Thank you,

IIRC the 1.4 TSI in these is a belt, those 1.4 TSI with the chain issues were an older variant fitted to the MK2 Facelift.

The 2.0 TSI in the VRS has a chain, but I think with this generation VW Group learned from the mistakes of the earlier engines and failing tensioners etc. I haven't seen anyone report chain cam failure on a MK3 Octavia.

Some information in the post here:

And also some here too which might help:

I am also keen to know more details about this engine and it's design.

The totally new 1.4 TSi was introduced in 2013 and fitted to the Golf 7, Leon 3 and the Octavia 3. Subsequently its been fitted to many other models.

It unrelated to the sometimes troublesome chain drive 1.4 TSI (including the especially troublesome twin boost versions) and has a belt drive for the cams.

Providing its a Mk3 you buy it will be a belt drive engine.
