I've got a 1.4tdi 06 fabia and its been running great with minimal issues for months now. However Something which I'm always asked by passengers is why the car is so loud, vibrating as if it's going to stall in low revs. To run the car comfortably I need to stay in 2nd to 20mph 3rd to 30mph... Is there any reason for this? I try to keep it in lower gears but then fuel consumption goes up. Is there any sound deadening I can add to the engine bay to make it quieter?

Those 3-cylinder engines are agricultural at low speeds, not much you can do about it I'm afraid.

There are sound deadening products available if you are prepared to pay. Even an engine one alone if you do some googling. 

Hi 7600ee. I've just added soundproofing to my 1.9 tdi estate, and it has helped a fair bit....... 

 

I have also added this foam-based product to the underneath of my bonnet (and placed the original soundproofing mat over the top of it)
