Rattling underneath the car

Featured Replies

Hello to you all,

I finally managed to get a 2008 tfsi vrs and I like it a lot. 3 weeks after and I noticed a rattling sound coming from underneath the passenger side all the way to the back door.  Today it happened for the second time, both on a cold start. First wasn't rattling as much as the second did and it only extended underneath the front passenger door and it stopped atfer the engine got warm. I have yet to check whether the temperature influences it, as for the second time I had to move the car from a parking spot to another, a minute drive. Could it be the catalytic converter gone bad? I also noticed the oil level was a few mm above the max level when I checked a couple weeks ago, now it's at max. Thinking this may have been the cause, and it broke my converter. Hopefully this hasn't affected the engine, I did notice it rattling as well when coldish and on a step climb, as if a more guttural/grovly sound.

Only one way to find out and that is to get underneath and have a good wiggle of things to see what is loose.

Took the car out today, it rattled slightly less for a minute or so on warmup. Will put the car on a ramp and have a look at it one of these days.

is it s tinny rattle - if so it is likely to be the exhaust heat shields that are held on with spring clips.  The latter rust over tie and fall off.

The rattle isn't that noisy, only yesterday when I moved the car to a different parking spot it sounded louder or so it seemed as it was late in the evening, colder as well. Will try and make a video of it when it happens. Should probably mention I had the final exhaust changed to the original one when I bought the car, it had an aftermarket end exhaust installed, but then I welded back the original. Will have a look at those springs as well

Managed to record it from inside, seemed to come from the passenger footwell. When I got outside it already faded.

Seriously, why get all hung up on what it could be and guesswork on a forum, just look and you'll more than likely find out.

Then if you need more help we can try to resolve your issue.

Found out what was causing the noise. It had been the fuel line/duct underneath the car or behind the engine that was rattling onto something for a few minutes while the engine was cold. Went to a mechanic and he put a clamp on that line near the coolant tank but it made the sound permanent after a short drive and he took it off. Thing is that the weather got warm and the sound doesn't happen anymore, only when minus degrees outside. I still need to find a clamp solution if the rattling comes back. Will post a video of it if anyone needs comparing or finds it useful:
