Knocking from front and steering twitching

Featured Replies

I've got a problem with my mk1 VRS Octavia.  It was clicking/knocking badly when I turned predominantly right and really only when accelerating.  Now does it when in straight line, also the steering twitches sharply to the left.  Odd thing is seems very intermittent.  Any ideas?

I would start by checking the lower wishbones and ball joints. A good mate of mine had a similar issue and found to a combination of ball joint failure and worn out bushes. Also check that the subframe bushes are tight. Also (after re-reading the post, that will teach me to not read a post before fully waking up lol) check the right hand driveshaft, CV outer boot for splits and grease everywhere as if previously split and no grease replaced then it will have caused premature wear on the CV joint. The outer CV joints can be bought from Euro Car Parts quite reasonably.

Primo candidate would be the front offside (driver's side) cv joint.

If so it will worsen over time and if left too long may fail altogether = no drive to that wheel. Note there is a small chance the joint could break under load which could trigger an "interesting" situation at speed, in traffic or whilst "making good progress".

A common cause is the failure of the protective cv boot (a flexible plastic bellows that fits over the joint to keep the road out of the bearings). An eyeball and finger inspection will usually tell on this.

The cv joints are not repairable but can be replaced quickly and economically by your favourite mechanics.
