I have been informed that I now need a new cambelt as the car is 5 years old (Superb MK2 2ltr 170 60K). Now Skoda Leicester would like £489 for this pleasure including a water pump. I have a friend that is willing to do the work as long as I buy the parts so I got the prices from said dealer, £204 for cambelt kit, £58 for water pump but then he said we would also recommend changing the Engine mount and drive shaft bolts (I'm sure he said some other bolt but missed that!)  for an additional £50

 

Is this true??

Very likely correct. Transverse engined TDIs have generally needed one of the engine mounts to be removed to change the timing belt (the mount is inside the belt path) and those are usually held with torque-to-yield (TTY) bolts which are single use only. They also require careful tightening with a torque wrench or they can snap or work loose. If your friend looks at you funny when you mention TTY bolts, I'd suggest politely declining his offer to do it. There are also a bunch of specialist tools needed to lock the engine so the timing stays correct: if he doesn't have those he won't be able to do the job properly.

Negotiate with your dealer. I paid £389 including all the belts and liquids. Some have even paid less than that.  What year is your car? As if it is still in warranty and anything goes wrong, you might be on a sticky wicket.

I thought this is a fixed price job for dealers. Can it be negotiated? My 2013 superb CR170 with 115K also needs a change.

It'll depend on your dealer.

 

I've certainly had success with both my local dealers negotiating servicing and maintenance costs below those prices listed online

Just had cambelt and water pump changed (5 years old/41,000 miles) for £369 at specialist VAG Independent

I will have a look round this week. Not sure if the dealer will do anything on price

Walk away then. There's lots of excellent independent VAG specialists around in the East Midlands.

+1, if they want your business they'll put some effort in.

 

If they don't need it then chances are they won't be that bothered about doing a proper job either.

 

There's too much choice out there to roll back and accept dealer pricing as being the only option.

My Dad just bought 62 plate Superb Estate 170Tdi for £8,500 from main dealer and as it had 66,000miles on the clock he got them to change the belt/water pump into the price paid. They had the car advertised at £9,000.
