I know I've been rather busy with questions but in new territory as previously been in vauxhall world.

 

Anyways.

 

When car is in gear there is quite a bit of "side to side" play in gearstick, can this be tightened up some how? 

 

I remember from escort days you just needed to replace rubber bushes type thing.

the bushes will be worn in the linkage somewhere. Mine is the same and need to get round to sorting it as 6th-4th gear is quite difficult due to the slop

ignore anyone who tells you the linkages need adjusting etc as that wont affect the play in the lever in gear!

Sounds like the exact issue I had with the escort many moons ago.
