The one that uses a smart phone as the screen

What doesn't work?

Have you contacted the seller and checked you've wired it in correctly?

Sorry yes it is a little vague .

You connect the power unit that produces the signal for the camera to the brake and reverse light also an earth .

The idea is when the brake is pressed then reverse is selected it activates the power unit that sends picture to app that has been downloaded to phone .

This works perfectly when ignition is on .

My problem is once the ignition is on and engine is running the the unit will not connect to app

So it works perfectly if the engine isn't running, but when the engine runs it does't work? Maybe the simplest way to check with a multi meter or a 12V tester whether or not the reversing camera has power with the engine running - maybe you've wired something improperly.

There is a light on the box that supplies power and signal to camera .

this is remains lit when engine running and ignition only .

It appears that something is interfering with the signal .

i have wired it to an switch ignition live from fuse box and it works fine .

if there is onl;y a connection to reverse light, brake light and earth (neutral) then surely it will only work when you brake and select reverse?

The brake and reverse lights are monitored by the bulb warning system. I expect this is causing interference...

You should contact the manufacturer to see what they suggest.

I still struggle to understand the ignition on/engine running situation ... you can't have a running engine with no ignition?

There are two 12v sources. Ignition and on.

The "On" 12v positive wire should only have power only in the "On" position and while starting.

Ignition always has power once the key goes to ignition and beyond. The concept is to be able to power up some things, like the windows, without the need to fire up all the whole system and drawing a lot of current when it is not needed.

What you wrote doesn't have anything to do with how the OP is explaining, read again:

It is either one or the other, can't be both at the same time ... that's why I can't figure out with what exactly he has an issue (in terms of 12V power)

you will need a 12v live switched feed, the brake lights should be disregarded and the trigger wire should be patched into the rev light only with of course a good earth, you dont say if your car has led tail clusters but if it does they work on very low voltages and so probably dont provide enough power for a clean signal to the phone once the car is running and the GPS system is working
