RFL... Let's just call it an accounting error...

Featured Replies

I was just going through the invoice for the 1.5 7 seat DSG I have on order, and noted that there was a charge of £555 for RFL. Road tax as most know it.

My online research would tell me it should be £515 for the first year and then £140 per year afterwards.

Can anyone confirm? Wondering if the dealer has made an accounting error!

I presume there is an error as my 2.0 Tsi was £500, which I think went up to £515 on 1st April, + £55 registration fee  so your, I presume you mean 1.4, should be less than that.

Sorry yes 1.4.

Hmm I'm wondering if he is hiding first reg fee in with the RFL figure?

Just get the Principal Dealer or Director of finance to set it out.

Not Road Tax or Road Fund Licence.

the VED / Vehicle Excise Duty, first registration and any other tax as paid for by you.

I think dealer has made an error in my favour. I will have to check the invoice but  I don't think a separate registration fee is listed. I suspect he's tried to hide it all in the RFL fee but charged me the old RFL fee (£500) and the registration fee (£55).

However the RFL fee has now gone up to £515 and the registration fee stayed the same so he's £15 down.

I will check with him but won't be paying any more than is on my order form!

Perhaps it was done before the increase.  It might only be £15 set against the cost if a car, however would you not be complaining if you thought you'd been overcharged by £15. Honesty is a two-way street.

Yes the order was placed before the increase and I suspect their systems had the old rates in them.

I will point it out but suspect that if there is an error, the dealer will just give it as goodwill.

Honestly is a 2 way street but Autoglym doesn't cost £400....and a dealer will happily sell it for that price.

That's not being dishonest that's basically 'buyer beware'. They're selling at a price they think they can get away with selling it at.

Being dishonest would be if they added  the Autoglym cost to your purchase and didn't tell you.

My invoice has RFL as £200.  It's a diesel.  The future  increase in tax band was known about at the time the invoice was created.

Anyone think I'll get away without having to pay a further £300...?

If you signed the order with it at £200 I wouldn't expect to pay more. Dealer will just have to take a small hit in their profit!

Am unreasonable in this approach?

You guys must have a detailed order form! Mine states the list price less discount plus options less deposit.

I'm assuming all the elements that make up the on-the-road price are baked into the list or OTR price.

Be a bit careful with this. Some things aren't VATable... RFL being one. If the RFL has just been rolled in to the overall price you might well be paying 20% VAT on something that isn't VATable.

Just to bring this full circle.... I spoke to the dealer earlier. The charge is for first year tax and first registration fee. It should be £515 +£55 so £570. I've benefitted to the tune of £15 but dealer isn't bothered. Swings and roundabouts I guess.

  • 2 months later...

I got a quote from a dealer where he states the Road Fund License as £515 but i specced 1.4tsi 150hp DSG - 2wd (he advised it would be 1.5tsi) which should £205 as it isnt the 4x4.

I basically got him to admit it was his mistake.

He also booked £590 for delivery - after i queried it, he said it was delivery from the factory to the dealership.

Is that what is standard or is he trying to pull a fast one.

I was hoping for a further £900 off but he is sticking to his gun, he isnt changing the quote price.

Is he hedging his bet against the 1.5tsi as the prices for those engines are not out yet?

I'd expect delivery to be included in the quoted price.

Tax seems too high!

As offski said back in April, can we stop saying road tax or road fund licence, please?

Yes, the tax was originally introduced to fund the building of the better roads which motorcars would need, but the Chancellor of the Exchequer who cancelled that was Winston Churchill, and the year was .... 1937!

I hate to be pedantic... oh, wait, no I don't :D. You said it is commonly known as 'road tax' - but then posted screenshots where it is not once referred to as 'road tax', only 'vehicle tax'.

Just saying... :tongueout:

It's a tax though... So why wouldn't we refer to it as a tax?

Vehicle Excise Duty.

On fuel or alcohol there can be a Duty and then tax on that.    TV Licence is just robbery.

Tax tax tax!

They did away with what 'commonly' was called a 'Tax Disc' and makers of Tax Disc Holders.

how things move on and common language changes.

  • Author

Common language hasn't changed. It's still tax be it road tax or vehicle tax or car tax.

Lots of people hoover the house but don't own a Hoover, they own a vacuum. But hoover is the term in common usage....

Heavens.  I wasn't suggesting we don't call it a tax.  It is, after all, a tax.  I was asking that we stop mistakenly calling it a "road" tax. It hasn't been for 81 years.  Because of the wrongly used term, we still get people saying silly things like "I pay my road tax; why don't they mend the potholes?".

It would be a jolly good idea to mend the potholes ... but making a supposedly logical connection with something that died 81 years ago is, shall we say, weak?
