Play in steering

Featured Replies

Hello again. An ongoing issue I am having with the steering I hope someone can help with. Had play in the steering and had both inner tie rods replaced. Mechanic assured me the rack was fine as I suspected this. Both drop links have been replaced along with the anti roll bar bushes and rear beam ones for poly. Now then, with the engine switched off and key in ignition, I still get a small knocking/tapping when turning the steering wheel from side to side which sounds like it's coming from the rack. . I still suspect it's the rack having some play but wanted to get some thoughts before I take it back to the mechanic.

Cheers all in advance.

Get him to check the console bushes, I had this issue replaced them and was fine again, may not be your answer but it was mine...

Check for rack play with the engine and ignition off, if you can feel it at the steering wheel then it;s the rack, if it only happens when the PAS is running it's probably suspension related.

A bit annoying, the slight knocking felt at the steering wheel on my wife's old Polo - after my MOT man issued an advisory on it, disappeared after I replaced track rods!

Strange. I can't feel any play or hear any when the pas is running. Just a little knocking/tapping  with the engine off and key in when I jiggle the steering wheel side to side. Annoying me more than anything. I had it tracked about a month ago and it kept Losing track so was diagnosed with play in the inner tie rods. I have new Toyo proxes to go on when I get the wheels refrurbed so don't want this to upset the tracking again or mash up the new tyres.

Thanks mate. Track rod ends are virtually new. Wish it was that simple. :)

Yes, I wrote "track rods" which is the part that you said had already being replaced, TRE are the bits that screw onto the ends of these rods, I'd be surprised if it was making the tracking change by much, that sounds more like the TCA rear voided bushes - as mentioned a bit earlier, so check them out for wear/tear and try to ignore the very slight knocking which should not be there if quality track rods complete with inner knuckles have been replaced on both sides already.

Edit:- just one other question, when you spotted that there was a knocking at the steering wheel engine off car stationary, then got the track rod assemblies replaced, did not get rid of this slight knocking at that time?

Rear bushes are polyurethane. Recently replaced. The little knock comes from the rack area as far as I can tell. The inner tie rods where done yesterday but the little knock when engine off still persists. I can't feel any play when the engine is running though(or driving) Just when the engine is off with the key in I get a little tapping/knocking when I wobble the steering wheel .

Incidentally. Drop links have been replaced with meyle hd ones  and anti roll bar bushes replaced. Only thing that hasn't is the console bushes.

The console bushes are the rear bushes!  So, running out potential worn points then, lower swivels or strut top bearings or damper tube bearings and small TCA front bush left?

Sorry I should have said the rear axle  bushes have been replaced with polyurethane. The front suspension arm bushes are the only thing that hasn't been changed. I'm going to get the garage to give it another going over today if possible. Thanks for all the advice. I'll get them to check over the suspension arm bushes . This will be a new car when I'm finished ha

How about the universal joint on the column? Rare but not unheard of.

Cheers mate. That had crossed my mind.

Just this minute had the wheels off and I can feel play in the driveshafts. I had leaking CV boots for a while but did them last week. Maybe the leaking boots has caused damage to the driveshafts? Other than that the only other thing I can think of is balljoints. It's back in the garage on Saturday anyway. Sick of getting my hands dirty. Stop one knock/ clonk and it's much easier to hear the next one lol
