Options? Replace Gearbox or drive till it fails

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have some mild shaking in the car, only occurs when accelerating and only really noticeable in 4th and 5th gear. But enough to be uncomfortable. At high enough speed its less (autobahn Germany speed), but between 70-80 and 130 km/h its quite annoying.  Had the car checked at the garage, and they pretty much eliminated all but the gearbox. They suspect differential in the gearbox. (wheels newly balanced btw)

This is a Fabia Station Wagon, 6Y5, 1.4v Petrol 16v from 2004. It only got 120K km on it, and is otherwise in very good condition. I had the timing belts and water pump replaced last year.

Is it worth finding a second hand gearbox and have it replaced? Or shall i drive the car until it fails. I'm on the fence, its a good car. But its also 14 years old. If i could replace the box myself i guess its a no braining, but need to have it done at a garage.

Options?

Thanks in advance

Gearbox will not cause the shaking you describe, it sounds like a damaged tyre or wheel. Try swapping the back wheels to the front to see if that helps.

@ToreV - In particular that wouldn't be the differential because they're noisy rather than out of balance in any state between OK and broken.

I'm not too sure if fabias have it but most FWD cars have a rubber doughnut on the longer driveshaft to balance it, this can come off and cause vibration, it happened to my mates lupo.

fabias dont have the rubber doughnut, but could be an out of balance driveshaft or a bad cv joint

have they checked the upper left engine mount? mine failed and made the car shudder and vibrate like mad!

Thanks for the replies :)

We will check the wheels, but i just swapped two tires and moved wheels from back to front as well as balanced. And the issue is the same. Well except no steering wheel vibration now :) Makes me more optimistic hearing the differential should be noisy, that garage I have mixed experience with.

I do hope its not the Gearbox, come to think of it, I think it seems worse when the car is cold.

I have a second garage looking at it now, if that fails as well I may bring it to the VW garage.  Ive spent 15 euro in diag, and this guy will check for free and charge for repair.

Ive invested quite a bit the last 12 months, new exhaust, cambelt, towbar, tires. I hope to drive it another 100K. 120K shouldn't be allot for this car. Fully serviced every year.
