Scratches on black gloss around gear lever.

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I was cleaning inside my car today, and noticed a droplet of something on the black gloss around the gear lever. I wiped it with a clean cloth and it now has lots of little scratches where I wiped.. Has anyone had a similar experience, and is there a product I can use to reverse the damage?

Thanks.

VAG cars always had cheap/thin coatings in that area.  Mk5 Golfs are notorious for it.

Never did find a solution to remove the scratches fully.

Yes exactly the same.

Ive only had my car three weeks and there’s marks already.

Seems to to show up in certain light.

Ive come to terms with it.

If you can be bothered, it can be removed from the car quite easily. Then use a polishing mop on a slow speed, high gloss pad and ultra-fine cutting compound - similar to polishing out the scratches on the gloss black b-pillars on the exterior.

T-cut and a microfibre cloth will achieve the same result, but will obviously take longer.

I find most microfibre cloths are too rough to go anywhere near any black plastic on a Skoda, softest material I found was using an old thin T shirt of all things!

How do you remove the centre trim? I don’t like the fake carbon in the VRS so want to wrap it gloss black!

I Was referring to the trim around the gear lever specifically; if you lift the rubber mat that stops vibration/things sliding around in the cubby directly in front of the gear lever, you will be able to get your fingers under the trim and lift upwards. Once the front of the panel is free, work on the sides and the bottom edge of the panel (furthest away from the dash). Once you start to lift away, you’ll be able to see how the gear lever gaitor/chrome trim is held in place with some tabs. Release these and the trim will be free to polish until your OCD is satisfied.

When I get home from work, I’ll have a look at the manuals for removing other trim, but probably not so easy, especially on the dash/door cards.

Thanks!
