Has anyone actually fitted OEM Reversing Camera?

Featured Replies

I have searched the forums but can't find any details of how to route the cable from the camera in the boot lid to the Amundsen 2 unit on my 2017 Yeti L&K 1.4 Tsi.

If anybody has done it please could they let me know how the cable was routed and what bits of trim etc were removed.  Was this the OEM route or is that built in to the loom?

Thanks

A factory fitted camera will probably be part of the loom.

As a retrofit, I'd probably go across the dash, up an A-pillar, across the roof and into the boot lid. Make sure you have some loom tape to avoid rattles :)

And be careful not to restrict the curtain airbags on the way.

I had the reversing camera fitted as a option when I ordered the car.  The camera, fitted in a modified boot release, is wired as part of the loom. I can not say if the “wires to connect the camera” are there in all looms or if this is a special.  Works well as long as you make sure that rain etc. Is cleared from the lens after overnight parking.

I would think that all looms are specific to the car and the extras ordered when it was built.

Why would they waste all that wire in the 99 out of 100 cars that do not have the camera fitted.

With modern computerised design and build each loom can be custom made for the car it is destined for and it will arrive on the assembly line exactly when needed.

For Yetis fitted with reversing camera system there is a separate wiring loom for the tailgate - VAG part no: 5L6 971 147 H. Maybe this is of help:

Thanks for all the help - looks like it is more than my DIY skills will allow!

This can be an easy and cheap DIY job, but takes a while because of having to remove rear compartment trim , boot panel trim and routing cables..

for the mirror display ..

BW 2 in 1 5 inch Digital Color TFT LCD 16:9 5" Screen Car Rearview Mirror Security from amazon only £19.96

wiring up - I chose to have my dashcam permanently live (so I can leave it on in cars park visits etc) and wired it to the internal 12v / lighter socket fuse (30A)

Then I combined the phone and mirror display on the same fuse as the rear wiper (15A) - note: 1.2 TSI 2016 model other s may well be different.

for the camera ......

replacement camera/boot release handle £8.99 from china (eBay)

I took a punt on this eBay china camera/boot release as noticed it had the same dimensions as the Yeti one. The camera and the boot release mechanism work great, but the fitment is different.

ie. the OEM has plastic clip-in lugs to keep it in place

whilst the Chinese copy comes with 2 bolts

so it's necessary to improvise some form of fixing assembly - here's my not so elegant but functional solution.

- t voila 0works great both as boot release replacement switch and as a camera, the image is actually very good.

I wired the camera into the blue/black reverse light cable and the body earth point shown.

on shifting to reverse gear, the rear view camera worked fine with the key on Acc, however, with the engine running, the image would flicker then disappear.

a bit of research suggested the problem was with the camera being connected to a non stable signal on the reversing light circuit when the engine was running as it needs to be connected to a constant 12v. - (the dreaded VW canbus system)

My solution was to take the wiring I'd installed from the reverse light and use it as a trigger for a micro relay and to take the stable power supply from the rear wiper.

note: the video cable supplied with the mirror display wasn't long enough to route all the way back to the camera, however, a second video lead came with the camera, it was an easy job to splice the two cables together - note the live wire wasn't required as this is simply used to trigger the display on infotainment system displays.

everything works great, so was well pleased

cheap as chips

fair enough the camera has failed after 6 months, but I've simply fitted another one for £8.99 - not an issue.

approx 2 days DIY (would now take 1 day as I'm no longer scared of ripping trim panels off - LOL)

Great work. Can you give more detail on connection with relay. Is it a 4 pin relay? I am facing similar issue with camera. Any wiring diagram?
