Rear caliper carrier

Featured Replies

What tool do I need to get the rear caliper carrier off on a 2.0 TDI 4x4

Is it a 14mm spline or hex key?

I ask as I've got a loose brake shield that i though I'd get at by taking the caliper off and the disk off but there wasn't the room to get the disk off with the carrier in place.  I've therefore botched a fix on two of the shield fixings with some aluminium plate cut to size as open washer packing that I could drop in under the screws for the shield but really need to get the carrier off to replace the shield or do a proper fix.  Trouble is I didn't have time to get a proper look and certainly don't seem to have anything that fitted in amongst all my tools...

I think its an M14 ZTN or NTZ bit, but watch out its bloody tight!!!!, 90 Nm then 90Deg, I did my rear disks a couple of years ago and had to rent a 2 post ramp from the local garage just to do the job.

Hope this helps,

Cut out the small middle bit of metal on the dust shield that stops the dust shield going over. Do the same on the old one to get it off.

They crack where the screw goes in to hold them on due to a chemical reaction which makes them rattle.

You don't need to take the carrier off.

Thanks both.  I'll see what I can find to do the job ( although if the are that tight - and they are 10 years old I may just pay my friendly garage to do it)

If you don't take the carrier off how do you get the disc off to get at the bottom of the three retaining screws?  I couldn't seem to get the room to ge te disc off without taking the carrier off and undoing the disc and moving it didnt give enough space to get a torx key in to undo the bottom shield screw (I could get at the top and side ones)...

Just cut the old one to get it off then you get into the 3 screws holding the rest of it on. Cut the middle strip of metal on the new one and it slipso overthe carrier then put the 3 screws back in.

Yes I understand that but how do you get the disc off without the carrier coming off.  I tried all sorts and the disc simply jammed against the carrier and hub restricting access to the shield retaining screws that are hidden behind it.

EDIT - just doe some more searching and it appears with the larger disc (as above) the carrier does have to come off to get the disc off and the carrier bolts can be a bugger to remove on a drive...   so I think I'll let a friendly man with a lift sort it...

Aren't the screws on the other side of the hub and screw towards the brake disk? I am sure when the mechanic did mine he never took the carrier off.
