Featured Replies

Hi I’m not 100% sure on the thread size of the 1.9tdi sump plug.

I need a helicoil kit I think it’s m14x 1.25 or m14 x1.5 does anybody know. This is for the 19mm head sumpplug

Thanks

I don't really understand why you need replace the sump plug, it's steel with a captive steel washer.

Ive been down this road myself ! I fitted an M14 x 1.5 VDO oil temp sensor and brass washer in place of the sump plug.

I change the washer every service and it doesn't leak - yet anyway !!

I had all the bits from a previous life and enjoyed fitting them but whether there is any useful info from them is another matter !

I'd agree, but for circa £2  I don't take the chance. Possibly this is a way for dealers to jack up the cost of an oil change. Possibly it's a side effect from the use of using compression washers else where. After 50+ years of driving ( and doing most of my own servicing on a lot more cars than I've got fingers) ,I've only changed a sump plug in one old car .( Head was damaged ).  Never had one leak, or had any other problems even on one that had an aluminium sump.

But dealers change them?????????????? Possibly a chance to think about re-using the old bolt and investing in a torque wrench, with the number of posts about sump plug problems.

But why ( unless [ enter name of usual local big name motor store] is close by) why not just hop down to local motor factor and check out their price.

I think the dealers probably fit a new one because they're used to the apprentice dropping the old one and losing it so it's more efficient to simply replace it.

I thought I was alone in never replacing them TBH. Unless they've been tightened to Ape strength and they're ruined, they go again, time after time. The sump material being alloy is softer than the washer so it tends to find it's own seal perfectly well.

I found with apprentices that you never gave them anything you did not want them to loose. 😁😁
