2nd and 4th gears not working

Featured Replies

I've been having intermittent problems with the 2nd and 4th gears of my Skoda Fabia since last week. The gear stick will go into position, but the gear goes in neutral. This problem goes away when the car has been turned off for a while, but comes back as soon as I go around a roundabout and then change from 1st to 2nd gear. I've also noticed that the gear stick is further back then it used to be. I'm having no problems with 1st, 3rd and 5th gears and am still commuting to work with this car.

I've taken it to a garage and they are quoting £1000 for the repairs, saying that the gearbox probably needs replacing and that I might as well have the clutch replaced too. I'm taking it to another garage next week to get a second opinion.

What I'd like to know is if this is something that can be fixed for a much smaller price and whether it is safe to carry on driving it until next week (as I need it for commuting to work).

The car is a Skoda Fabia sport 16V 2009, petrol manual.

I think I am correct in saying that some gearboxes use a series of linkages to change gears, rather then the gear stick being in direct contact with the gearbox.  Many cars used to use rods and linkages, for example or it might be cables etc.

These can often need re-positioing or replacing as oppose to the gearbox its self being worn. I would almost certainly find out if this is the case, prior to spending a small fortune on a replacement gearbox and clutch that will, if fitted correctly, be fine and then LOOK like it was needed. Be aware too, that a dodgy workshop may know it needs £100 quid worth of repair and sting you!  The clutch itself will be around £150 for the part but they may well be correct if they say the gearbox is worn and needs replacing, that replacing the clutch will benefit as it will cost more to remove again, then to replace whilst the gearbox is out.   BTW, a clutch at a main dealer may be close to £600, Mr clutch around £350. If the workshop owner is a conman, they will then start to tell you the flywheel is needing replacement, adding another lump to the sum. They do wear out and again, sign of wear may mean change it with the clutch, rather then let it kill a new clutch but a perfectly sound one will serve you well for ages.

You haven't mentioned the mileage, previous ownership, etc or if any parts such as clutch have ever been replaced before. Also, have you had anything done recently or has this just "Started" Out of the blue?
