Gear selector pressure spring

Featured Replies

This is how I repaired my gear selector.

This will work with any car that has the same gear selector. This is a guide for the SKODA FABIA MK1. Skip the parts about removing the panels/trim if your car doesn't match.

The problem: One cold morning I started the car and changed gear. A little snapping sound occurred and I heard something metal fall. Lifting the gaiter I could see that part of my spring located on the left side had fallen off. Because of this it still centred the gear stick but not "fully" and sometimes I'd end up between 1st and 2nd.

Is it easy to fix? Apparently so.

Tools required

  • T20 and T25/T30 screw bit
  • Pressure spring (Part number: 357711145C)
  • (Optional) Pry tools

IMG_20190606_141013.thumb.jpg.324fc5a774be1bbf5b083a2cc7da618a.jpg[Image 1] is the gear gaiter lifted.. This has the new spring which you can see on the left hand side.

How to

  1. Lifting the gear gaiter. This is a really simple step - Lift the ash/coin tray out of the front where you'll see three screws
IMG_20190606_141034.thumb.jpg.52284403aef3050d9e97698642fa8a7e.jpg[image 2] Pictured is the holes, the screws have been taken out. These are T20 screws
  2. Unscrew these, removing them from the tray and placing them somewhere safe
  3. You can now lift out the tray and gear gaiter. The gear surround is clipped in (You can see the two left clip holes in image 1). Once unclipped you don't need to take it all off, otherwise you'd need to remove the gear knob.
  4. Lift the tray at the back of the middle section. (The rear ash tray) where you'll see two  T20 screws
This so happens to also be the location to adjust your handbrake cables.

  5. Now we need to remove the cover located where the hand brake is. Again, you just need to pull it out which can be difficult but you may use tools to push the clips.
IMG_20190606_141607.thumb.jpg.df0cfa2ee211abcdcc85a1b50705d418.jpg[Image 4] is the cover removed, here you can see the clips and all the dirt that collects there
  6. By now the whole middle panel should move a fair amount. It's now being held in by your sear belt clips and the front panel which is the next step.
This part is poorly described but it should be obvious what is needs to be moved
  7. We now need to remove the panel under your stereo which wraps around the middle. In image 2 its the panel in the background, where a wire is hanging in front. This is just clipped in -
The sides are located in the passenger and drivers well. It's all one "U" piece. Pull both sides to unclip it here. Unfortunately it's just keep pulling until it comes undone. The clips are attached to the middle panel that we're removing so you can wiggle that too.
  8. Once the sides have been released you need to hold the middle panel down and pull the section we're trying to remove up. You'll see various clips and holes. Summary: take the panel out
  9. Now my poorly described panel is out you can freely move the middle section up and down. Remove the middle section by lifting it up, unclipping your cigarette lighter socket. The gear gaiter will fit through the hole if you move it upwards. You've now exposed the middle and made enough room for the next bit
  10. There's a metal bar in the way of removing the spring. This has a T25 (maybe T30) screw. Make sure what ever you use fits well as this is apparently weak metal. Unscrew this - for us it was in tightly. Holding the bar in place as I don't know what it does.
  11. Remove the old spring by sliding it over and out of the gap you've made by detaching the bar
  12. Slide on the new spring, you may pop off the other end of the bar to help. The spring crosses over (i've run out of upload space sorry) see Image 1 for reference
  13. Reattach the bar
  14. Your gear stick should now centre!

That's all! I don't know if this is what you're meant to do but it's so far working fine for me.

P.S I accidentally ordered 10 of those springs so perhaps you can buy one off me if you're near.
