alloy wheel locking nuts query

my car is going in for a service and i looked out the locking wheel nut tool just in case they need it

my wheel nuts look like real nuts....is there a cap over the locking ones which comes off easily??

  • Yep they're just caps   You should have what looks like a black tweezer type of tool in the boot, it slips over the plastic cap, give it a little tug and it'll pop off. If you don't have one

Your car must be going to a garage for servicing i assume, because the chance of a Skoda Main Dealers Service having your wheels off is slight to no chance.

I'm very impressed with your storage pouch/bag for the security bolt adaptor!  Now if I had one of them for my car, I'd store my adaptor plus the cap removal tool in these and keep it in the side storage area in the boot - as its correct place is in the tool kit UNDER the space saver in the spare wheel well!!

Bear in mind that the plastic cap which covers the locking wheel nut is slightly bigger than the others

Or even has a circular inner face instead of a hex inner face!  I do weird things like always fitting the security bolt in the same location on all the wheels - at or opposite the valve - saves me guessing when refitting these caps, probably also fit the wheels in a known orientation again valve at or opposite the drum/disc securing fixing, some people are very strange?

I too, have a very similar nut bag to you! (Ooh-err, mrs)! I usually keep it in the drivers door pocket and pop it in the centre cup holder if I am having any service work undertake, whilst also putting the service schedule on the passenger seat for stamping. Very hard not to see!  Most tyre places usually just pull off the plastic wheel nut covers with a pair of thin-nosed pliers as they won't want to search your boot for the small black tweezers so, yeah, popping those in with the locking cap is a good idea too, although they might have already pulled the caps prior to opening the pouch! 

 

BTW, I got my pouch from a tyre dealer. They usually give them away as they print their company details on them, like a business card so keep those eyes peeled folk!

 

I have yet to try the wheel nut removal tweezer to see if it will remove the small sidelight bulbs up front. It might just do but will be very easy to drop! (Tie string to it first, is my top tip).

Hum, I suppose another purchase from ebay!

 

My previous purchase got a dead TV back up and running, so I might as well grab one of these bags!

i take it even though all the caps look the same only under one of them is the security bolt...which this special socket fits over..

i think i will have a search for the tweezers and if i cant find it improvise with something..

but as stated...i dont think

1 they will need to take off a wheel

2 and if they do....then i have provided the essential tool and they have tweezers themselves

 

i saw a bmw today with a security bolt with no cap on it...must have fallen off

the other three fixings looked like regular bolts

does this mean only one of my caps is the "fake"

hence the suggestion elsewhere to put the security bolt in a regular position relative to...say the valve??

 

i will tap those bolts to see which is plastic and which is metal..

IME the missing one is usually where someone put the bigger cover for the locking nut / bolt on a normal one and then knocked a too small one on the Locker.

 

Tweezers much cheapness on Ebay, or as others do,  go checking cars for sale and nicking them.

No No No, don't go tapping, they all have plastic covers, and my money is on the bolt adjacent to the OD of SKODA in your picture, is the security bolt!

 

My amazingly clever plan would be to remove all these caps and leave them at home while the car is in for a service, by as Offski has said already, be prepared to be shocked if that dealership takes your wheels off during a service.

 

There should be a set of plastic wheel trim removers in the tool kit, they are just black plastic "tweezers" with short turned in ends, you push them down the sides of the plastic wheel bolt trims and as they have been forced open a bit as soon as they down pass the recess on these bolt trims, they engage, then you ease them out, no tools needed to refit them, just fingers!

 

Edit:- I'm such a fussy person that I only ever hand in wheels when I need new tyres or a puncture fixing, also I remove the wheel centre trim as well, if I'm honest, I even remove the valve caps when getting a new tyre, just in case I end up with a mixture of different looking new ones!!

no tapping....thanks!!

i had a rummage all through the boot and under the spare...which is a full size tyre on a steel wheel...UNUSED!!

and couldnt find the tweezers...i think my daughter who bought my 2012 kia rio which has alloys that there is a little neat box with the tools to take off the security bolt...bet there is a set of tweezers there...will check when she comes over tomorrow

 

***when i go for new tyres i think as advised i will remove the caps and the centre trim  as well....

Some cars had a little wire thing beside the tweezers for taking off wheel centre caps, some centre caps had a wee hole......

@mrcrow roughly £3 would get you one from ebay, I've never tried the dealer for one of them, but I'd guess that it would be a case of place an order then return a few days later to collect it, buying a cheap item like this from ebay saves you that annoying return trip to collect it.

I use the handle of a smallish hammer to tap these wheel centres out.

 

Some cars come with both types of wheel bolt trim removal tools as the steel loop type gets used to remove fog light trims, these steel ones were the original type as typically wheel centre trims also covered the wheel bolts, so they had a hole for this tool to fit into.  A few later VW Group cars have a hole in the centre of the wheel bolt trim - which is what Offski was referring to. One thing that I don’t like about these bolt trims with the hole through the middle is, water gets in behind these trims and that is never good long term as the bolt heads corrode a bit - though you do get a good grip on the trim so the trims should still be able to get removed, for the painted domed type, like your car has, having found some a bit tricky to remove due to slight bolt head corrosion, so now clean trim and bolt heads and very lightly coat all the bolt heads with super lub - just enough to prevent corrosion but still end up with the trims staying on the bolts.

Thin nosed pliers will do. Its the usual garage go-to.

Look that link up and it also has the little wire version to remove plastic wheel trims... 99p, PLUS make an offer!  Can you find a better deal?

 

Not sure if they are Genuine Audi/VW group ones but it is the correct fit. just slide it over the caps and gently pull. If its on correct, it will grip the end of the caps, including the locking wheel one, which I agree with Rum$mo, is the one he/she recommend it was...  The dealer will have no issue popping off the caps so you have time to order one easily. Just make sure the dealer replaces the caps as they often forget or don't push them on enough and they fly off when driven. The caps can be ordered separately, BTW, in case you DO lose one.

i got one cap off with two fine electrical test screwdrivers...

incidentally

i have been surveying car parks and a lot of most have no caps and one can see the locking nut

even very expensive and newish models...

 

there seems to be quite a variation as well as cap removing tools...

Yeah, they started to no longer use these ones and often have a bare nut or a circular cap, with a small hole in the centre.  I think these ones look a bit horrid, to be blunt! VW money saving " improvements"! I would almost certainly want a cover on a locking cap, to prevent ingress of dirt etc as you won't want the thing jamming. (Not in the Bob Marley sense).

keeping the wheel nuts safe from ingress...

Right, that is me sorted out now, nice new red bag for security bolt adaptor storage and a bolt trim removal tool in keep in there as well plus one for garage set of bits - can't think why other than never ever using the bolt trim cover removal tool from the car's tool kit when at home in case I leave it at home!!

 

Gravel in hub caps, ha ha, MGBs etc smell of half burned oil for me - were we really subjected to all that oily messy stuff 30>40 years go?

yes that smell of 30/40 sae oil running out the bell housing drip hole

that is on bmc engines anyway

...and the daft castro R people put in their fuel for a smell

on we go older and more modern??
