That is a very good piece of information

I think the "pattern" on the top of the bolt, or the corresponding pattern on the adaptor key gets distorted/damaged/broken - the threaded section of the bolt will survive, but you or the next unfortunate person dealing with that security bolt and/or maybe all the other security bolts on that car will now be faced with a problem getting these bolts out.

It’s the other way round in that the key gets distorted. You can buy new keys but they cost about the same as a new set of bolts and key. 

I’ve just had to go through the same situation and had the locking wheel nuts removed by a professional at £10 + VAT a wheel. Then had to buy replacement locking wheel nuts.
