Bike carrier roof or tow bar?

Featured Replies

What your thoughts guys, I need a bike carrier so Do i go roof bars or get a tow bar for a bike carrier?

I usually just drop the seats in the Monte Carlo fabia we have but recently bought this vrs so As run around etc , but it’s to much of a tight squeeze in the mk1 fabia. It’s the vrs so don’t really want cut the bumper if I can help it by having the roof bars.

Is a bike tied down enough with roof bars etc?

Whats peoples preference on this? Thanks

Tow bar every time for me. Security, aerodynamic and no awkward lifting.

I have had various tow bars. In some cases bumper cuts can be almost invisible.

i don’t know about the Mk1 Fabia though. I haven’t got one sorted for mine yet.

Interested to see if other contributors can shine a light on bumper cuts for the Fabia.

Fit a towbar, but call it a Bike rack as you can not tow with it, then you might have to tell your Insurer the Bike Rack is the kind used on a towbar which you do not tow with. Then fit electrics, which you will need anyway if you just use a rear rack and lighting board.

Thanks for the input ,imaware  of the vrs not having a tow bar option but I though with not towing ... it would be ok maybe a grey area?

Very much a grey area.

Clear though you can not fit a Towbar to the vRS as a Tow Bar as not Type Approved and a Tow Bar fitter knows that.

But you can fit a Roll Bar Inside or outside a car, you can add to a cars structure, put braces underneath etc,

so you are using a Tow Bar not Approved for a vRS as a structure to put a bike rack on.

Only once did a Mot tester tell me remove the tow ball.  Mk2 Fabia vRS, they can not tow either.

Roof carrier for me, thule are so secure forgot all about the bike on it and did some very spirited driving up to some very quick speeds, didn't have any issues.

Rear carriers are a pain as you have to buy the towbar and electrics and then put up with the fact the bike is wider than the car so be careful to squeeze through any gaps. At least with a roof carrier its only low car parks which are something to watch out for.
