Gyp's "Two-Piece Not Quite So Variable Boot Floor" build

P.S. if anyone else is thinking of doing this, i don't think OSB is the best answer. I'm not sure what is, but it has just a bit too much flex for my liking so I've not been confident enough to climb in the boot as yet.

I quite happily climbed into my Octavia with the factory VBF.

Mind you, I was 15 years lighter then...

And here it is...

Getting a bit "variable" with tartan OAP rug in place

And the rear piece in place

Going to the tip mode

And back to normal. Don't be concerned by the black diesel container in a petrol car; it's for weedkiller...

I've realised that the floor mat should stop the handle from bouncing around too.

So that's it. The £50 TPNQSVBF is complete.

Well, not quite. The obligatory "oh bugger" moment was the discovery that the Yeti floor mat wouldn't quite fit in underneath.

The cross brace on the forward piece was intended to hold the board in place by resting against the front lip of the boot, but it doesn't need to as the edge of the board rests against the back of the rear seats.

As it's now in the way I may remove it. Or trim it down. Or not bother and leave the Yeti mat in the garage and just grab it when I need it. :-)

For £50, that’s a great piece of engineering ;)

You keeping the Superb boot mat in there with the carpet side up?

Good job!

It's been very interesting watching you get this together. Bargain price as well!

Fantastic job - looks great! Now eagerly awaiting the to-scale schematics, plans, and final parts list so I can have a bash....*

* Only joking - I don't think you needed to deviate much from your initial plans did you?

It's plastic side up at the moment as we seem to be visiting garden centres, but I'll try it carpet side up at some point

Cheers, it's a bit agricultural compared with the genuine item but it'll do.

Schematics would be a great idea as then, as may have been mentioned earlier in the thread, some wood places will laser cut the pieces to the shape required at little or no extra cost.

And no, I didn't deviate - the board sizes were exactly as stated, though of course the rearmost edge was trimmed to shape so ended up fractionally shorter.

Go on, have a go and let us know how you get on

You seem to be forgetting the point in an earlier thread where I highlighted my astonishingly poor DIY skills and ability to undertake anything remotely 'handy'...

Having said that, I may have a bash at replicating what you've done. £50 isn't a huge amount to right off if I make a mess of it, and it's not 'fixed' the the car so there's only so much damage i can do.

Great job!

I think that you could flog a few of these to people on here! Nice job

That looks like a great job.. good work..

Tidy work! Couple of warnings though, don't dump anything heavy or climb in yourself as the boards where unsupported won't appreciate it. I've got factory variable floor in my Octavia estate and that has a weight limit of 75kg. In order to sleep in the back with the seats down and carry the occasional heavy load I've made extra supports for under the middle.

Right back from the depths...

Having a bit of a garage clear out, I've got enough of the wood for the uprights and the carpet left if anyone else wants to build one all they'd need to add is the OSB and a couple of hours of effort.

Is there chance for those schematics and measurements of this project you did here? I plan to do same for my MK3 Superb.

Other than the dimensions on the first post I don't have any schematics, though as it's basically 2 pieces of wood and some batons you can't go far wrong

Cheers thanks. I think I misread the post. I will try to post my solution as well.
