Just put a deposit down on a 3.6! Advice appreciated!

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I've just put a deposit down on a FL 3.6. I'd appreciate any advice you have on the following:

1) the car is 2014 with a full Skoda service history. Can I put an extended warranty on this (from Skoda). The factory warranty has finished - will the gap matter?

2) anything particular to look out for? Difficult to find info on the 3.6 presumably as it's quite rare. From what I've read they are pretty bulletproof.

3) car has around 40k miles. Quite alot of road noise on the test drive. Had continental tyres - I've read that these can be the culprit. Could it be anything else?

4) finally what kind of mpg do people get?

Thanks!!

Welcome.

Is it from a main dealer or independent. If you are worried about your mpg then do not get the car.

Others with far better knowledge than mine will be along but be patient for a day as it is bank holiday.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. not worried about mpg as such - more curious. I am expecting 25-30?

Is it the Petrol blue one that’s on eBay ??

very nice looking car

Great decision! B)

25-30mpg possible for sure. Search on here (or on my threads) to see quite a bit posted about 'real world' figures as opposed to microdot etc.

40k miles only? Wow, quite a find....enjoy it as they are wonderful cars. Oh, and yes, tyre noise can be an issue (unless you hear lots of metal clanking and things) in which case maybe its not your tyres...

No idea about warranty in the UK but if it has a FSH with a supplying dealer (or within the franchise) its worth an ask...you never know.

Keep us posted and enjoy it.  Is there a link to your car (eBay or autotrader etc.)? Be nice to see some pics...

Dave

Edited to add: If it is that lovely blue estate on eBay then wow, what a cracking car!

Oooohh - I'd love a FL v6  -  Enjoy!!! Fortunately the FL v6 has much cheaper road fund licence compared to the pre FL v6

I'm not sure if they are available for the 3.6 - but I've found the Michelin Crossclimates to be a lot quieter than the original Continentals on my lowly FL 1.4tsi S model.

The gap from the end of a Manufacturers Warranty until buying a Skoda Warranty does not matter.

The Main Dealer Servicing is no guarantee of that much being done.

Does not mean the Brake Fluid gets changed at 3 years, or the Haldex Serviced or a DSG getting an oil change at 40,000 miles, so check what has been done,

and is on the system.

Thanks for the info.

The car is not the blue one - it seems quite highly priced to me but the car does look fantastic. The one I have bought on is a 2014 plate with 35,000 miles. Paid 12K. Elegance and not as well specced as the blue one. Has pan sunroof, rail system (but missing the bar / band), and I think park assist but no other options. Difficult to judge price as not many on sale!

Has a set of almost new tyres on currently, but crossclimates likely my next choice!

Thank you - will have to take a look. DSG has just been done. Will have to check brake fluid / haldex but if these have not been done I will get them done asap. Do you know if warranty needs to have mail dealership history of can I use an independent?

Thanks

OEM parts, correct fluids, serviced to Manufacturers Schedule / Spec at a VAT Registered Establishment, is supposed to be the story.

So a good Independent with all the gear and more than an idea, maybe licensed equipment and ex VW Master Techs is as good as a Main Dealership with a look, a free wash and vacuum, high bill and an oil and filter change and maybe parts fitted maybe not.

Simply a rip off!

Regarding road noise, the tyres that were at the end of their life on the car when I got it were Conti 5s ... I've put on new Good Year Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3, so far very satisfied - performance in the dry and wet is outstanding (the only better tyre in the rain would have to be the Uniroyal Rain Sport 3, but they're somewhat softer, and will very quickly loose the tyre thread and depth, especially on heavier and powerful cars).

Unfortunately the tyres are almost new!

I ended up paying 12K for mine - 35K miles, 2014 plate. Difficult to judge price - what do people think?

I think that sounds rather good value for a 3.6 estate with decent (low) miles and FSH.

But I'm a bit out of touch with UK pricing....in Suisse that would be nearer £20k :o

I wish I’d know this when I bought mine but then again, if it really made much difference then I wouldn’t be able to afford the fuel bill either! :D

I think that’s a good price. You should get at least a 12-month warranty. I’m told that Skoda UK will not offer more than 3 months on a car with more than 72k, so at such low miles etc. it sounds a good deal.

I take mine to an independent specialist. Ex-Porsche Master Tech rather than Skoda I believe but I’m not expecting anything warranty-wise at over 100k miles and nearly 7 years old.

Cheers,

Steve

That is interesting to read - mine came with what I’d say are budget tires nearly brand new. They seem to be surprisingly hard-wearing though, given I’ve made no attempt to conserve them and they don’t seem particularly worn after nearly 15k miles. I assume that means a hard compound and that’s contributing to the noise. Been wondering what to replace them with.

I think 25ish at best from my pre-FL car. It doesn’t get much above 30 on the maxidot even on a long run at 70 on the M1 without having to touch brake/accelerator I find. Sitting in traffic/town driving is very inefficient, unsurprisingly. I think I average about 260 miles between refuelling.

I think the worst I’ve seen was after a fair bit of “enthusiastic” driving through the Peaks etc and got a little over 200 miles before refuelling... The car really needs a bigger tank - something to watch out for on long trips!

That sounds about right, I can do 450-500 kms, mostly short daily commute ... on the long runs, it could do over 600 kms (cruising at 130 km/h on the highway).

They obviously didn't think about installing the 3.6 in the car when preparing the fuel tank ... :D ... it would be great if it had 75 liters (like you'd expect on higher tier cars, especially the thirsty ones).

pff even the 170 tdi tank feels tiddly only get 530 miles in mixed stop start and a little A road driving my previous passat would do well over 700 but it had a bigger tank

I must say that I actually researched if there would be any way to fit a tyre wheel round tank and connect it to the main tank (basically, making it an capacity extension) ... and to make it legal (test and certifications if required) ... didn't find any such option anywhere .. the only "alternative" would be to fit a LPG gas tank (tyre well) and have it like a main/spare fuel source ... but I don't think you could get more than 100-150 km out of it
