Just How ?

Featured Replies

So travelling home today its been a bit dingier than normal and I noticed that the indicator repeater on the passenger wing mirror seems to have gone walk about.

I am baffled as to how..

  • No damage to wing mirror
  • Not hit anything
  • Plastic is quite thick as well and appears to be snapped off

Having looked at the assembly on the drivers side the strip appears to go the full length of the mirror rather than in 2 sections like I first thought.

I still cannot think of a way this could have happened apart from vandalism but seriously , who has the time ??..you'd just take the whole wing mirror off... the most pressure it has is from a Karcher K4 pressure washer....

Also, as the wing mirror has a repeater there as standard  for safety then I would imagine it is a MOT failure as well..

I had a rear reflector on my old MK2 that was half broken and it failed the MOT due to it because the rules state that if such safety systems and accessories are standard with the car then they should present and in working order.

I doubt I'd ever be able to blag a warranty claim with Skoda/VW UK

Lets hope this bit is available to order rather than the whole mirror assembly

Not inconceivable that some chopper has clouted it in a car park and twanged it off, either mirror to mirror or hitting it as they walk past.

For Construction & Use & a UK MOT a vehicle requires a pair of matching rear reflectors, also requires indicators.

Indicators on the mirrors are not required and not checked at a MOT.

Thanks Offski  . I wasn't sure but that puts my mind at rest that I don't need to get it sorted within the next month before my MOT is due.

I can find used  mirrors online but they don't have blind spot monitor so it maybe retro fit time..:)

Without looking it up - I think the old MOT required working side repeaters unless the front indicator lens wraps around the front wing and the indicator flash can be seen when stood in some specified position towards the back and away from the side of the car

I know side indicator repeaters aren't a requirement, but I thought if it was there, it has to work?

Same as a rear wiper etc?

This.

This is from https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/documents/manuals/class3457/Section-4-Lamps-reflectors-and-electrical-equipment.html#section_4.4

Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986 must be fitted with an amber side repeater indicator on each side.

The side repeater can be part of the front direction indicator if it has one of the following:

  • a wraparound lens marked either with an ‘E’ mark in a circle or an ‘e’ mark in a rectangle with a number 5 above it
  • an amber light coming through the front lens when viewed from 1m to the side of the rear bumper

I also thought that broken and repaired lenses were an automatic MOT failure  until I read You must assess repairs to lamps for security, colour, light output and durability.

(I also thought that an MOT was the condition at test so why does the tester have to decide if the glue used will fail at an unspecified time in the future)

Looking for the testing manual reminded me of the "MOT horrors" pages at https://mattersoftesting.blog.gov.uk/category/horror-stories/

I stand corrected :)
